Bought this at the Edward Gorey House gift shop for a friend. Of course I had to read it, myself.

Abrupt and beautiful, as all fairy tales should be.

I had been meaning to read this for years, and I desperately wanted to like it. For awhile, I did. I loved the chimera, and I wanted to know more about their world and Karou’s history. I liked the setting, the secondary characters, and the way Razgut the fallen angel is portrayed.

Then, we meet Akiva, and everything falls apart. Insta-love is one thing, but insta-love with someone who’s personally responsible for murdering your own people? And who tried to kill you?That I can’t abide.

Tempted to give an extra star because of Brimstone and Kishmish (who is an adorable bat/crow hybrid), but I’m withholding that star because both of them die.

Will not continue, which makes me a little sad because I SO wanted to find another binge-worthy series after The Raven Cycle, but there are far too many other books in the world for me to read these and be angry.

I still adore this series, but I would have liked tighter storytelling in this one. There are a lot of secondary characters and subplots that fizzle out, and a lot of lingering questions that go unanswered. Hopefully the upcoming Ronan series will be more satisfying.
