The truly great thing about this book is that you don’t leave it feeling hopeless about all the big, shitty, unfunny things in the world. You leave it with a greater appreciation for someone who is doing a bang-up job of articulating and exposing the world’s shittiness, and with a bit more faith in the value and effectiveness of articulating and exposing that shittiness.

I didn’t necessarily intend to read yet another Sarah MacLean book so quickly. But when I got an Edelweiss update email that mentioned that ARCs were available of her upcoming book A Scot in the Dark… and when I saw that it’s the second in a series… Well, I had no choice but to download the sequel and check the first out from the library. Right?

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is less than 400 pages long, and it took me two weeks to get through. This shouldn’t have been the case. It’s a well-constructed book. Its premise works with familiar tropes and combines them in interesting ways. It bears similarities to The Exorcist, Heathers, and Jennifer’s Body, three of my favorite films. Every chapter is titled after an ’80s song. There’s a lot of delightful stuff going on.

Wow, did I really need this reread. Review (which will undoubtedly be more of an ode to Neil Gaiman and a remembrance of readings past) to come.

Two stars is misleading, because I enjoyed this book despite recognizing that, objectively, it's just okay.

I've also read #3, but I'm not finding it on Goodreads. This series is all style and no substance, but in a sort of charming, campy way. I'll buy #4 to finish out the arc, but I don't know if I'll follow it beyond that.
