Definitely not an easy book to listen to. It’s hard to understand from the outside why someone didn’t say something to the police or someone else that could help.
Later in the story I had to skip over some segments because I couldn’t listen to the same things being done to another person. My heart hurts for all the victims.
Wow!
I hope this mother is not actually out of jail now!

3.5 stars.
This was an interesting book. It was like a cozy mystery on a bigger scale crossed with a murder mystery game.
I couldn’t really like any of the characters and it kind of dragged in a few spots but overall it was a good story.

"A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir..."

Heartbreaking - YES, very! but I have no idea where the hilarious is. This is a memoir about a young girl to adult who was sexually, physically and emotionally abused by her own mother. On top of that, the effects of being a child actor and growing up in that world where emotional and sexual abuse is very prevalent. There is not a drop of hilarious in this book.
I picked this book for our book club because I thought there was going to be some light-hearted reading included. That is so far from the truth!
Kudos to Jennette for having the strength to tell your story.

The story writing was good but the twist toward the end of the book was not believable. It’s hard to imagine that being done to get someone’s attention.
There were parts of the book that dragged somewhat. The description of the island was well done. It was easy to picture what the author was describing.
This is book one of more.

I tried this book as an audio first and quickly realized that this was not the best way to read this book. So I switched to digital. Unfortunately the whole book is layed out in a movie/tv script format with newspaper clippings and book/report pages, etc. None of it is done is traditional book format, which is pretty cool but difficult to read, for me.
I love the concept but I want to read it in story form maybe with a few pages of different format amongst the pages.

What an interesting story about a book of doors! Not my usual genre to read but the cover I was drawn in first by the cover and then from the summary. I would never have guessed this is where it would lead me! The imagination of the author is incredible. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 full stars is… I don’t understand where the books came from. That seemed to never be explained in the story. It was brought up but never continued. Or was it explained and I missed it? I’m not sure. I’d love to know though!!
