The morale of the book: women’s mental health is not a effing joke!! Also, women are badasses and men ain’t shit. I approve this message. Lol. Basically, this is a dark ghost story that I feel is in a way a metaphor for post partum depression/normal depression in women, especially those of color taken less seriously. Generational trauma is a huge theme, and I am happy to say despite all the realistic and gruesome shit these women are put through, they pull out and manage to start a new cycle of caring for themselves and paying more attention to their wants and needs.

3.5 stars only for the slow pace that was a little off putting toward the middle of the book. Once through that though, it’s a very delightful and heartwarming book at the end, and very inspiring in a magical sort of way.

This wasn’t a suspense, it was a soap opera. I’ve never seen so much thrown at the reader with such little time left in the book, and all of it so coincidental that none of it really made sense. Even for a fiction book the events were extremely unlikely to all be happening at the end so nicely tied up in a bow. And the twists after the twists at the very very end were even worse! With how little suspense/horror actually happening in this book, I’d label it a drama way before I ever put the “horror” or “thriller” tags on the description. Just wow. Very disappointed.
