Can I say that I am overjoyed at the ending of the Mirage duology. The world that Somaiya created was beautiful and a breath of fresh air. I was worried that my love of the first would hinder me going into the sequel, but it did not. In fact, I think I loved this a bit more. I was on the fence about Maram in Mirage, as I'm sure most people were, but I had such high hopes for her. Her character development did not let me down. She and Amani both blossomed in this story in ways that I did not imagine. They both found their foothold in a world determined to keep them underfoot and in their places.
The writing of the book itself was beautiful, but honestly I expected nothing less. I especially enjoyed reading Maram's perspective, which is something I felt was missing from the first book. I'll admit that I was wrong. I don't think I would have appreciated Maram as a character or all of her nuances as much if I had been given a look into her mind during Mirage. Somaiya, you're a genius. I'll admit it.
On a completely unrelated note, I was very pleased to see the sapphic romance, which I'd heard hints about. Their relationship progression was just *chef's kiss* and my bby deserved all the happiness.

So here's the thing. I almost gave this 4 stars and here's why: it felt a bit....easy. The journey of course was work and obviously they hit obstacles along the way, but in the end I think that I expected more push back. It had me thinking that something was lacking in this story, but after a few minutes, I changed my mind. Maybe the issue is that I'm just not used to getting pure happiness from a fantasy/sci-fi story that way it happened here. Maybe I'm so conditioned to expect the protagonists to get blow after devastating blow and THAT'S why I felt like something was mixing. Tragedy does not have to be a major part of a resolution and the fact that Somaiya Daud made it her business to say enough is enough....well I have to stan.

2/2/2023- I changed my mind. This books deserves every bit of these 5 stars. PERIOD!
9/23/2020- did this re-read make me realize that this book is probably more of a 4-4.5 star read? Yes. Did I still round up to 5 stars because the nostalgia and seeing Black characters live their best life was worth it? YEP!
I honestly am just glad this book still withstands the test of time for me and so glad that Jason & Kyra still don’t disappoint.
2017- I read this book a very long time ago, but I've read it quite a few times since the first time I picked it up. It's honestly such a cute story of young black love and has always been one of my favorites. We don't have many books out here like this one, which is sad, but it definitely makes this book a gem. And I would say the same about Dana's second book Played, which is a slightly different concept, but set in the same world. Honestly, I don't think I've ever been happier with the "nerd girl wins the star athlete's heart" storyline than when I read this.

This was such an intense read. I can’t imagine being in jax’s or maya’s shoes or even writing their story, but Rilzy did a fantastic job.
I have so many unanswered questions and these characters were infuriating but I love the world that Sabaa created. You’ve won this round I suppose and you have my interest.
2.5 this just wasn’t for me. I enjoyed the first book a lot. The fact that I listened to the audiobook might have influenced me but I just wasn’t a fan of the main characters. They just both seemed insufferable. I understood their insecurities and their problems but...it was just hard for me to care. I’ll still read the next book though
I absolutely loved this. I'd always heard such great things about Fruits Basket so after seeing it in the bookstore on sale, I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad that I did. It's was cute as a button, but it was also a beautiful depiction of grief, found family, and learning to love yourself. I can't wait to continue the series.
