I really enjoyed book 1 of this series and was really looking forward to continuing. I decided to wait until I had the third book, in my possession, to dive into this one. Unfortunately, I did not love this one as much as the first book, Truly Devious.
I still loved most of the characters in this book, especially Stevie. She’s really pretty great and I love how her mind works. I did not really care for David in this book. He kind of goes a bit crazy and really isn’t all that nice in this one. I get where the author was going, with reading the third book, but I did not like it one bit, in this one.
I did enjoy getting to know our other characters a bit more. I really enjoy her band of friends. I think that Johnson does a great job with her characters because I just really enjoyed them. Really, that was the best part about this book.
My biggest issue is that it is so s l o w. There really isn’t much that happens in this book at all! There’s no action and I kept finding myself dozing off. I loved how there was so much action and craziness going on in the first book and we don’t really get that here.
We do get a little more about the mystery but really I was left with a lot more questions than anything! I wish we would have gotten a bit more clarity or something to really make this book more interesting.
Overall, this was an okay read. It really reads as a filler book until we get to the final book. It’s unfortunate but that will happen.

I started this book right after I finished the second. I’m so glad I did because I don’t know that I would have ever gotten to it. The second book was really slow and boring at times. So, it would have probably kept me from picking this one up. This book grabbed my attention really quick!
In this book, we learn a lot more about the past. I loved those flashbacks and learning what was happening. We do kind of learn about the past with our characters in the present. Although, they don’t really get as much information as we do. It kept the flow moving a lot quicker for me because I was finally getting answers!
Our characters were also great here. I still loved Stevie and I wish that I could be as intuitive as she is! I did see what Johnson was doing with David’s character in the second and third book. He’s still not my favorite here but I understand. We do finally get back to the old David before the story is over, so there is that.
This book was filled with a lot more action, which I loved. I missed that in book two. I will say, I totally figured out 95% of our “mystery” before we get half way through this book. Well, I definitely figured out the current murders. I really hate when that happens because it ruins the fun for me! I really just want to be shocked and say I didn’t see that coming!
It was a satisfying enough ending but I felt like this could have been an AMAZING duology! She could have made either book a bit longer and it would have been just great. Overall, this was a fun mystery series and I really enjoyed the characters!

I finally read this!! It’s been on my book shelf since 2012!! It’s one of those that I constantly went back and forth on getting rid of or keeping. I have the whole series, so I always just held onto it. Plus, I really like the cover!
This is about Calla, a werewolf, who is about to be married off. She’s an alpha and joining her pack with the only other pack. She ends up saving the life of a human and then her life is changing it’s course. She’s learning all these things about her life and history that have her questioning everything. I did like Calla at first, she was strong and fierce. I felt like that kind of fell away throughout the book. There is an incident that I think made a big impact on her behavior change, so I’ll give her that. She did redeem herself a bit at the end. I’m hoping we will see more of that in the next book.
I definitely would have liked this more if I read it 8 years ago. It wasn’t a bad read but I had some issues with it. I found the pacing really good, I read this one rather quickly. There’s always something going on, so I never really got bored. There is a lot of sexism in this book. The typical alpha male and he can do whatever he pleases to any woman and so on. It was kind of annoying to read about. I think the author was trying to shed light on it but it was cringe-worthy, the way she did it. There are some other things that could be triggering for people too.
I did really like Shay and how he’s telling her that she’s her own person. I also love the fact that she’s the magical one and he’s the human in this story. I always feel like it’s the other way around! Speaking of magic, there was a big lack of it! I think the world building definitely needs some work because there’s a lot of questions and no answers.
Overall, I did like the book but I was disappointed. I did think the ending was done really well. There’s a lot going on and a lot that comes to light. I have a lot of questions and will definitely read the next book! I do hope that it gets better as we go on.

I will do my best to write a coherent review. I have a major book hangover from this book!! It was SO good. It did have a couple issues but the plot and world building were so amazing that I had to give it 5 stars! It took me a while bc I was between 4/5. I just was so caught up in the story that I cried, I laughed and the last 300 pages are AMAZING. Maas did not disappoint with this one!
My biggest issue with the book is the first ~150 pages or so. There are so many information dumps that it was completely overwhelming. The world building was absolutely fantastic though. I understand that she was really trying to convey how this world worked and all the different systems and all the magic. It was a tough and slow start though. Once you get past this part, it was FANTASTIC! The plot moved along so fast and I just had to know what happened next. The last 300 pages are pretty spectacular and really made this book for me.
I’ve already mentioned the amazing world that Maas has created here. You have so many different paranormal creatures in a modern world. You name it, she’s got it. It was so awesome to see them all living (kind of) together.
One of my favorite things about this book are the friendships. There are many in this book that really pack a punch. This book is basically about the strength, love, and bond of one friendship in particular. It is beautiful. I don’t want to give away spoilers but I cried many times!
Bryce… wow.. She might be my favorite MC to date. I know, I know.. it’s crazy talk. She is BRAVE and awesome. Her whole life she has been pegged a certain way and it’s not great. Yet, she’s one of the fiercest and funniest characters I’ve read about in a long time. She didn’t care what others thought about her and she just went on with her life. The comebacks she has are hilarious and it was good. We needed the comedic relief at times because this book got dark and intense in places. By the end of this book, I was completely smitten with her!
The romance was such a slow burn and so fun. They didn’t want to be around each other at first but then.. guess what? It was fantastic and I loved every minute of it!
Besides the fact that this book is really long and there’s a lot of info dumps it was a wild ride! I loved this book so much and I cannot wait for the next one!

There’s just something about a book when the character or characters also love books! I think that’s one of my favorite things about this book. Becca loved her romance novels.
This was a great book to pick up to break up all the fantasies I have been reading. It’s light, fun and fluffy. Definitely a really fast read. This book does talk heavily about divorce and has a lot of focus on family, which is great.
There is one part of this book that literally broke my heart! Ugh, I don’t know if it’s because I have a kid now or what. I just don’t understand how a parent could want nothing to do with their child.
The romance in this book was cute and fun. I always love a fake dating to real dating story. I mean, you always know that’s what is going to happen. I did think that this story could have actually been a bit longer. It’s a short book but with everything that happens, the ending felt really rushed.
Was this anything really ground breaking? No. But if you want a cute read, this is a good choice. I also think it would be great to get out of a slump because it’s a really fast read.

Okay, this book was a little bit better than Furthermore. The cover to this book is STUNNING! I didn’t really have high hopes for this one but I did like more than the previous book.
Most of this book is about a new character, Laylee, who washes the dead and sends them on. Our previous characters, Oliver & Alice, come to her world to help her. No one knows how she needs help but things just end up going from bad to worse. I think the reason I enjoyed this one more is because most of it is focused on Laylee. I really enjoyed her character so much more than Alice and Oliver. She was way more interesting and her special abilities made for a much more engaging plot. She’s also tough and her story is quite heartbreaking.
Speaking of the plot, we actually have one in this book. The first book kept us in the dark about so many things and it was just frustrating. Here, we know what’s going on, even if our characters don’t. This book is also really dark. I’m quite shocked that this is a middle grade book because it might give me nightmares and I’m an adult! I would say this has more of a YA feel than Middle grade.
Overall, this one was a step up form Furthermore but it wasn’t my favorite. The plot and new characters were intriguing enough that I never got bored or counted pages. I am not sure that I would recommend this as middle grade because of how dark and scary the content can be. I don’t know that I would pick up another MG from Mafi.
