Do I need to even say anything? It’s an Emily Henry book. Of course it’s going to be a five star read.

Okay but in all seriousness — this book had me by the throat. I read it in three sittings. The relationship between Nora and Libby hurt and resonated with me deeply. As someone who’s always been “too intense” for most people this book was something I didn’t know I needed. Nora was someone I didn’t know I needed to read from and live in despite her skin not being too much different from my own.

I don’t know if I actually cried or if I just felt like I was under rolling waves in the ocean, but I loved this book. What another wonderful romance that is about so much more.

well written and introspective. Although this piece is extremely outdated in my opinion. Furthermore, it’s also very obviously written from a white woman’s perspective.
While I cannot deny the impact money and time have on creation, and I do agree that having more of both would allow for more art to be written, I think that some of the better pieces I’ve written were written from poor women who did not have the education Woolf spoke of.
Anyways. I think this book was interesting, but I think a lot of these ideas should be contrasted to the writings of women of color and poor women.

This book is incredibly written and truly authentic. It’s a pleasure and privilege to hear anything written by someone read in their own voice — this book is a wonderful example of that.

I loved how this book shifts and meanders. How it is both essay, personal stories, poems, love letters, and conversations. To me, this format emphasized the beauty of interdependence and pushed against the idea of what a book must look like.

I digested this book in spurts over the course of several months if I’m honest. I never tuned out once. The concepts discussed aren’t unfamiliar to me, but how they are framed and phrased, reminded me of the work still needed to be done and the true meaning of the work.

Damn this book had potential, mostly in the relationships between the characters (mostly Myron and Bea), but unfortunately they were underdeveloped and most of the characters fell flat. Scenes and dialogue often felt forced. Honestly what brings this book down to a two for me is the character of Gorgia. She adds nothing to the story and is just sexualized and acts as an object for the main character to obsess over. (As if the case with any woman who aren’t his sister or a mom) If I didn’t know this book was written by a woman I’d assume it was written by a man.

Overall I enjoyed this book, it really explores society and how we function within it. It’s a book I want to eventually read physically and dissect properly.

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

The characters were two dimensional and the SA was simply too much for me. I wasn’t getting hooked into the storyline and the characters and their relationships weren’t compelling enough for me to continue reading.
Also the incest between Jynn and Ceci was atrocious. I’m sorry but if characters are raised as siblings they are siblings.

i just couldn’t get into it. The writing is interesting, but I think I just wasn’t in the mood for it.
