I’ve been putting of writing this review because I had to sit with it for a little while. I got super invested in this story immediately and I could barely put it down, even when I wish I could because it was hurting so much. I know this author is angsty, and it was marketed as ‘moderate angst’ while someone else said it was low angst. Apparently what others feel is moderate or low is sky high to me, lol. I would have been fine if the focus stayed on Gray and his recovery, but there was a lot of relationship angst, pretty much from the very start until the epilogue. That is not to say that everything Gray was dealing with didn’t turn angsty, but it’s a different beast and the kind I can handle really well. It just felt like it never once let up, and reading it was draining.
“Beck.” I didn’t turn around. He didn’t ask me to. “Just… If you decide this was a big mistake, I understand. But please…please don’t shut me out. I can forget it ever happened if that’s what you want. But I can’t lose my best friend.”
I am always amazed at how visceral the fear feels in Nicky’s books. She does not shy away from tricky subjects or complicated characters, but she does it so well, most of the time. It’s a balance not many authors can manage.
I’m not a stranger to Nicky’s more assholeish characters, and they usually redeem themselves or are assholes in a more endearing and understandable way (Takoda from The One That Got Away, for example), but I’m afraid I didn’t end up liking Beck all that much, even after the very end. He did not have an easy time either and it’s understandable that he struggled, but there was something about his overall personality that didn’t lend itself to a main character in a romance book (for me). His derogatory comments about women did not help. A former hookup has braces and he comments on her lack of blowjob skills several times throughout, and when he goes on another date with her he tunes her out because she talks a lot, and then thinks about how it makes sense he put her mouth to use last time, so she’d stop talking. I’m paraphrasing, but you get the idea. I genuinely considered DNFing at this point, but I was massively invested in Grayson’s story.
A complicated story for sure, and maybe not the perfect fit for me, but this author is so talented and kept me in it anyway.
When the last of my anxiety dripped away, I was left feeling ashamed and alone. Rattled from the experience but empty in my core as though I was missing something vital.

Cheating: No
Other person drama: Yes. Beck sets up date with former hookup in order to get laid (after both have started catching feelings, before hookup with each other). He goes home with her after the date and they grind and make out, but he leaves before it goes further. In general there is quite a lot of talk about hookups with other people.
Beck goes to a gay bar alone at 89%, trying to see if he’s attracted to men other than Gray. The MCs have been together for a while at this point.

Fifteen years loving him the wrong way, and fifteen years hating on every girl he introduced me to, talked about, fucked, or made eye contact with. It made me question just what kind of friend I was most days.
“I’m not gay,” I pronounced slowly and with emphasis. “This isn’t happening, Gray. Do you hear me? I was asleep. It wasn’t you I was thinking about.” “Believe me, I know. I accepted that a long time ago.” Fuck him for looking so goddamn defeated and torn up.

Jason hadn’t thought Owen would steer him out of his home, once again groaning about having reached his limit. It was all very efficiently done, a firm yet gentle grip on the back of his neck, steady steps, and disbelieving laughter—and Jason . . . sort of, kind of, completely got it.
This book really tickled my funny bone. The humor was just so casual. Always there, but somehow didn't feel forced. It was just funny through and through. It was also surprisingly hot. Who doesn't love a guy who likes to be held down a little while boning. Anyway, super cute and funny, and also made me shed a couple of tears, as adoption is a big theme throughout and apparently that's got a direct line to my tear ducts.
Definitely recommend if you feel like reading something light, low angst, funny and hot.
“Did it get you?” Jason blinked, startled, and looked down. Owen was outlining a small tear in his jeans. Oh. He squeezed his thighs together and shook his head. “Ah, I’m fine. Just got the denim.”
“Thank you.”
“Oh yes, thank you, Sergeant Owen Stirling. Sir.”
“That wasn’t a directive, Jason.”

“Yes, I have my own home and my own life—and it’s quite different from Carl’s. Although, we’ve obviously both got groaning wood that needs tending to.” Owen walked out of the room. Just turned and swept out. “Owen?” A grumble came around a bend in the hall, unintelligible.

Fuck. I think I have a crush on my enemy.
That was fun. I like sports romances where the sport is a big part of it and the author obviously knows what they’re writing about. There was a lot of great sexual tension, loads of bickering and banter, awesome fighting, reluctant friends, and much more. Bi-awakened Ty also figures out he loves c*m, no matter where he has to suck it out of. Yikes, is that a little graphic? Very true tho.
When I release him, my hand makes its way down to my cum that Ty so hotly dribbled down my dick, and I run my fingers through it. But as I lift them to my mouth, Ty grabs my wrist, staring down at me. “That’s mine,” he says in a low voice, then brings my fingers to his lips, licking them clean.
I don’t actually like enemies to lovers so I knew this book wouldn’t be ‘for me’ as it were, but I still enjoyed it. I also know it’s a duet, so hopefully more stuff will happen in book 2, because this one was pretty repetitive and there was some stuff I wanted to happen that didn’t, as well as some relationship development. So yeah, hopefully time for that in the next book. I also think I had built the ending up in my head because it felt a little anticlimactic. I just love bad stuff happening and general chaos, of which there wasn’t a lot, lol.
“And do you think he shares these feelings?”
“I think so… he at least hates me less now.”
“Ok.” He chuckles again. “And could you talk to him about this…?”
“We already did.” I point to my face. His eyes widen.
“Uh… ok…”
I nod. “It went really well, actually.”
His face twists in horror as his eyes roam over the cuts and bruises.
The writing is great, and it’s fun to see how the author has evolved in such a short amount of time. Pretty sure she’s got a great career in writing ahead of her.
I wanna read a book about shy little badass Noah.

This review is NSFA (Not Safe For Author)
Maybe this bombed so badly for me because I had too many expectations going in, but come on. This was unfortunately brutal. I’ll try to be a little nice about it, but it boils down to zero relationship focus or development, followed by a ‘suspenseful’ case I didn’t care one bit about. We didn’t get any backstory or any context that would make the case, the main focus of the story, interesting. I ended up zoning out whenever it was talked about, which was often. The first times the MCs met was great, as they immediately felt the mate pull, but after the first time someone orgasmed it all fell away.
I love romantic suspense books *so* much and have read a fuckton of them, so maybe that’s why badly written action gets on my nerves, but you mean to tell me you forcefully kick in a rusted old door to an abondoned factory with bad guys inside without any repercussions, but on the next page, a door creaking open can be heard echoing throughout the building?

That’s only a small part of my issues with the mystery case, but anything else would spoil the plot.
Also, I’m about to project a general annoyance with the genre on this book, which is unfortunate for the book but no less true. What the actual fricking frick is the point of shifter books, especially with tiny, adorable shifters, if they aren’t gonna hang around shifted for half the book? Why isn’t the cute sea otter being carried around and cuddled the shit out of by his big-ass fated mate? Huh? That’s why we read this genre! Sure they shifted *twice*, but it was so short and felt like an afterthought to the main plot, which I have already forgotten.
So, turns out that wasn’t very nice. In my defense I read this during 8 days of exams so maybe I would’ve disliked whatever I ended up reading.
My first by this author and although the writing itself was decent, it wasn’t the right story for me, obviously.

Is ‘bleh’ a good enough review? No?
It’s been ages since I finished this book at this point, and the main things I remember is that it went from being super duper slow and a bit strange to everything suddenly happening near the end.
When it comes to pining and sexual awakenings, I do have more understanding and patience than I normally do. For example, if a gay character is pining for a straight friend, he might go on dates with others to try and move on, and I would understand that (to a point). However, in this one, he *knows* the ‘straight’ friend maybe isn’t so straight, and that they both have feelings for each other. He still goes on dates, looking for someone to hook up with. That I do not understand and don’t have much patience for. He does not succeed in finding someone to bone. The only thing he manages to do is have disappointing dates and hurt his friend’s feelings. Bravo.
Anyway, this book might work for you. Did not work for me.

A single teardrop cascades down his rugged face as he speaks, “In this life and even in the next, I’d always come after you, Kai.”
This was a really decent debut and a solid concept that felt fairly original, at least not a book I felt like I’d read ten times before. Both characters were good, although I had a soft spot for Eden. He’s a sensitive, hairy beefcake of a man. What’s not to love. Anyway, these guys had amazing chemistry early on during their first date. Unfortunately that chemistry sort of fizzled out a bit eventually, and the plot started to feel repetitive. Sure, there’s only so much variety you can get when the characters are literally stuck somewhere, but it felt like they had the same thoughts and conversations over and over.
Don’t get me wrong, it was still good and I’m looking forward to seeing more from this author. They clearly have talent and I imagine it will only get better.
It was nice to see a bit more realism when it comes to reacting to and dealing with trauma. They don’t immediately bounce back. They struggle, and they need professional help.
To me this was pretty low angst and surprisingly lighthearted, which I suppose might’ve been the author’s goal, or I’m just dead inside. Likely the latter. I suppose I wanted it to hurt more.

There was way too much going on early in this book, I think. It was fun to see more of Eli and Haruka, but it felt a bit confusing and all unnecessarily complicated for about the first half of the book. I think maybe I was a bit distracted while listening too, because I kept having to rewind the audio to keep up with the story.
Nothing bad by any means, but I’ve forgotten most of it already as it’s been a few days. Eli and Haruka didn’t feel as steady and secure in this book, and even though nothing actually happened, it was uncomfortable at times. Just a bit too much *possible* OM drama for my tastes. If you know your friend has the hots for you and they keep shooting their shot, and you know damn well your literal soulmate hates it, why the fuck are you still hanging out with said friend? Fool.

“You’re a light to my dark,” he said softly. “Where I see doom and gloom, you’re looking for a break in the clouds. You brighten me.”
I had a big smile on my face for most of this book. What a delightful read. Hearing the story of two young men who knew they couldn’t openly be themselves, who thought they would never get to have love or find their person, getting to have that life together? It was so sweet and tender, with two gentle and kind men who weren’t afraid of being vulnerable. I loved the entire book. Butter-lube included.
I’ve seen some reviews mention that it was ‘too easy’ or not enough happening, but I think maybe that was my favorite part. Why shouldn’t we get a story of two men finding that love in a time where most didn’t. Real life is more than shitty enough at the moment. It delivered on everything it was supposed to be, for me. It still tugged on my heartstrings and a low angst story doesn’t mean they didn’t have challenges.
The audiobook was amazing. Highly recommend.

“She was pretty, and I tried to find something that appealed to me but . . . my dreams are not filled with the likes of her.” Albie blinked a few times, licking his lips as if his mouth had gone dry. “What are the likes you dream of?” His voice was so soft, so pained, gruff. “Perhaps they match my own.”

Updated review after I got even more annoyed with it, lol. (NSFA - not safe for author)
The rampant sexual harassment in the workplace certainly wouldn’t fly in an M/F romance book, and it shouldn’t be okay just because there’s two men either. It's super problematic that it's being excused on the basis of 'he wants it'. The other character doesn't know that. He's just harassing his physical therapist for weeks. He even makes the physio MC nearly touch his hard dick during treatment he doesn’t actually need, just to trick him into putting his hands near his crotch. I know it’s not supposed to be that serious, and these guys are into each other, but that doesn’t make it okay and it made me super uncomfortable. This aspect never should have made it to the page, let alone get past alpha readers, beta readers, and I'm assuming multiple editors.
ALSO, to whom it may concern: handjobs and blowjobs are sex. I lost count of how many times one of the MCs said he hadn’t had sex in years, but had in fact both given and received both oral and handjobs several times. Sex isn’t exclusively penetration, and if I'm being extra about it, it's exclusive and offensive to say that it is.
There were some moments in there that kept me reading even when I kept complaining about all the shit annoying me, and kept me from giving up, hoping it would get better. Chief annoyance of them all; how the entire main conflict was severely contrived. Spoiler warning:
You can probably count on one hand how many times an NHL player has been traded while on injured reserved. It just doesn’t happen, AND it was a relatively minor injury and was blown way tf outta proportion. Most of the plot revolves around this thing that should be a non-issue. Just get the physical therapy and get back to playing when you can. I don’t even know what league this book was based on, but they mentioned the NHL. The regular season is literally 82 games. Stop freaking out about missing the preseason. Also, why are you so angry at your physical therapist for doing his goddamn job? I swear the British guy spent half the book throwing a tantrum, and not in a remotely cute way, unfortunately. The physical therapist also spends the first half being the 'uptight, rule-following professional', and then spends the second half breaking all the rules.
There was some good tension, but I had a hard time getting past the unrealistic plot and the awful sexual harassment. Oh, and it’s really long.

I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to look different when I opened them. It didn’t happen. It never did.
I’m not quite sure what to say about this one or how to rate it, because I went in expecting more lighthearted cuteness and shifter shenanigans like in the previous three books, and instead cried my way through the whole thing because of the fatshaming and internalized fatphobia. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the ‘fat gamer’ stereotype either, but I think my own issues are heavily influencing how I view this story. I kept waiting for the MC to feel better about himself, to maybe work through some of his own issues, to heal from the shaming and trauma, but instead it kinda felt like all of that potential growth was skipped in favor of him finding his fated mate. Which I understand, it *is* supposed to be a lighthearted shifter romance, but I feel like if you’re gonna take it in that direction, you gotta follow through. Some of the things that happened and was said, both by minor characters and the MC himself (about himself) was really fucking upsetting.
Some people might read this and not even notice, it all depends our own experiences I would think, but man did this hit me harder than it should, and way harder than I thought it would.

So Poppy was a wolf shifter? I didn’t expect that given his soft-spoken demeanor. I assumed he was a bunny, or a sentient cotton ball.
I remembered that despite their cute appearance, ferrets were predators—perfect little killing machines.
