WOW. This book is worth all of the hype it received and MORE. Michelle Obama is a phenomenal writer, which isn’t surprising at all, but still — I couldn’t stop reading her memoir. The book is spliced into 3 sections: one dealing with her childhood, one dealing with her relationship to Barack Obama and throughout the time leading up to his presidency, and one dealing with life after her husband had become President. Her writing is captivating, engrossing, and addicting. Plus, the entire time I was reading, I almost forgot I was reading a memoir — this book reads like interesting and well-thought out literary fiction. I had several moments throughout the book where I thought to myself “wow, I wish she’d write a novel.” I would absolutely recommend this.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The love story is super cute, but don’t let that fool you — this book deals with some important topics and I really appreciated it. The main character can be a bit of a pain at times, but I think it really works in his favor and lends to interesting character development. Definitely worth the read!

Really good. Could be kind of dense at some points, but the world building is spectacular.

SO ENGROSSING. WOW. What I really appreciate about this dark retelling of The Little Mermaid is that it’s not super obvious unless you go into the book with prior knowledge that it is indeed a retelling. The book’s grittiness and the author’s handling of the two main characters is superb. Also, as a standalone fantasy novel, it pulls its weight and then some. I’m definitely interested in reading more of what this author writes, especially if that includes more dark retellings!

I was hesitant going into The Dark Artifices series because I have such a fondness and love for The Mortal Instruments. HOWEVER, Lady Midnight did not disappoint. The squadron of characters (and there are definitely plenty!) in Lady Midnight is handled in an expert manner — it never feels overwhelming or is hard to keep track of. I’m excited to dive deeper into the Shadowhunter Universe and continue on with this series and others.

WOWZA. I love the characters and the romance. Helen Hoang has you rooting for them every step of the way. I truly enjoyed this reading experience and was sad when the story had to end!
