Wow..... Just wow....
What has not already been said about this heartbreaking, beautiful, and angry novel?
I listened to this as an audiobook, and I would recommend this be read in that format. The narrator makes it much more authentic and more gut wrenching and emotional. This needs to be taught in schools and something that should be read by every single person.
I hope the adaptation coming out in October captures the raw emotion of this book and the emotional realness we need in the Political Climate of 2018 America.

I am a big sucker for a Scottish man in a kilt (Hello Outlander..) so I was ready to pick up this second volume in The Highlander series, even after only giving the first one 3 stars as well.
I felt that this one was weaker than the first one. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it either. Felt very middle of the road. Grimm and Jillian, our main characters, were annoying from page one and didn't get any better through the book. While the first book deals with time travel, this second book deals with "a mythical beast in the form of a man" called a Berserker. We spent half of the book in a "will they, won't they" situation, which even for romance novels goes on too long. I don't read a lot of straight romance novels, but I did enjoy the way the sex scenes were written. They are done tasteful and realistic and makes a big deal to focus on Jillian's pleasure not just Grimm's. I have heard the series gets better at book four, so I'm willing to continue to at least that point.

The Black Mage is a stand along graphic novel that is part Harry Potter part Little Witch Academia. Our main character, Tom Token is the only black student at an all white school. (Nudge.. Nudge.. get it... he's the token black kid..) Tom also a familiar named Jim (who is a Crow). He meets Lauren and she helps him solve a mystery about a missing student and in the process they uncover a conspiracy at the school.
This deals with the KKK and racism, and I don't want to make an opinion on if that is handled correctly, but I will say I can see how this could be a good conservation starter with a younger reader about racism. This had some fun pop culture references that didn't feel forced. I loved the art style, but felt it was too short. This had the potential to be longer. We could have had some more character development and more time to see a friendship blossom between Tom and Lauren.
