A good book, meant mostly to help and empower those with asthma, but a good story about a girl chasing her dreams, too.
I'm not a horse person. I don't like horse stories, either. But I really liked this book. It's slow in spots, but overall it's a good, solid horse book.
I'm torn: on the one hand, it's chick-lit for teenagers. Not that chick-lit's bad; there are some very delightful moments in the book. But.. well, it just kind of fell flat and felt choppy to me. I can imagine that some girls would just LUV it though.
Adorable. Clementine for boys. :) I adored it.
A quick little book about a horse-loving girl who lives in California in the late 1800s. She's forced, because of flooding in her town, to attend a girls refining school in San Francisco. Throw in some class conflict, a bit of adventure in Chinatown, a loving family, and some overly-didactic preachyness, and you've pretty much got the book in a nutshell. Good for horse-loving girls ages 7-10.
When people ask me why I hated living in Mississippi, I'm going to suggest they read this book. It's not a brilliant civil rights book, but Burg has racist whites down pat. It was difficult for me to get through: I knew people who still acted like they do in the book. And that's just depressing.
I was surprised how much I liked this. I expected that it would be one I bailed on, but I found myself drawn into the story. The main character's voice was just the right blend of disbelief and interest in the idea that his cousin is *really* an alien. Some good action sequences, and a bit of a surprise at the end. Not just that it's enjoyable, either.
I'm not quite sure what to say about this, other than I loved it. Too much information, and the twists and surprises are ruined. Too little, and you don't want to read it. But do: it's got a lot of heart, soul, and spirit.
Odd little book on friendship: enjoyable, but quirky. A myriad of references to the 70s that I kind of got, but were completely beyond my 8 year old's knowledge. Thankfully, they weren't really central to the plot. Still, the odd nature of the book kind of irritated me. 8 yo liked it, though.
Going out on a limb here: I caught the lyricalness of the book, I felt the pain and hope of the story, and I can understand why this is getting so much hype. But it bored. me. to. tears. Drove me nuts.
