A haunting, fact-filled tale of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident and the consequences it had in one girl's life. Good read.
The problem with a Mormon vampire book is that the two things -- Mormons and vampires -- are not usually compatible. Even so, it was an interesting idea to put a vampire in Sandy, Utah, to see how the Mormons would react. And Woodbury had some interesting interpretation on the whole vampire thing. But that's all this book was: an interesting idea. The rest, pardon the pun, sucked.
I'm the wrong age group. And I can't help but be bored with this one. Not much of a story, not much of a character to like, and not much of a book. But I bet some 8 year olds would absolutely love it.
If you haven't read Clementine, don't start with this one (though I did... and it didn't hurt). It's a wonderful little book, that packs more punch than you think a slim one would. It's fun, it's sweet, it's cute, it's funny. It's thoroughly enjoyable. Hand it to your kids (my 8 yo loves Clementine!), read it yourself. And fall in love with Clementine, too.
I bailed. I have too much to read, and it was moving WAY too slow for my tastes. And it was a bit on the teacher-y side, too.
It's not often you read a book about art, friendship and mystery where the main character is... a beetle. but Broach makes it work, very cleverly. And enjoyably.
Kind of creepy book with a feel-good ending. I liked it, until the end. I think I wanted it to be darker than it turned out to be.
A good, mild, look at dealing with friendship, and how to swim against the current in elementary school. I really liked how the main character dealt with her conflicts. A good read.
A good book. Quirky, unusual, odd... but fun. What I really liked, though, were the Quentin Blake-esque illustrations. They were absolutely charming.
I adore Moxy Maxwell. She makes me laugh uproariously (though in this case, I would NOT have reacted the way her mom did), yet she's sweet and endearing. A wonderful book.
