For an adventure book it sure took a long time getting started... and then was kind of well, lacking in that edge-of-the-seatness that an adventure book should have. I did like the use of the Robin Hood legends, though...
I liked it, quite a bit. It's the second in a series (possibly better when read after the first one....) but works well as a stand alone. It's got genius kids, a lot of pluck, a bit of mystery and some fun adventure. A good read.
Very cute. It's all about atmosphere; I've heard it compared to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and while I think it lacks the whimsy that Dahl's book has, it's still a very good, very fun read.
Hooray for naval books! Loved Jacky as a heroine. Liked the story. It's a bit intense in parts, but nothing too overboard. A very good getaway.
A touching, poignant (that's what we say when someone dies) look at war and how it touches our ordinary, everyday, American war. A subtle rebuke in it for everyone who doesn't remember the regular joes, the ones that got drafted and died. A good book.
A good idea -- that things can be bettered by learning about history -- but a bit heavy-handed on the lecture and light on the plot and character development. Interesting information about Paul Robeson, though.
Interesting book. Good mood, good characters, fascinating look at the south, both in the Depression and during the Civil War. I didn't even mind the abrupt ending; I felt like the story had run itself out, and to go on would just be superfluous.
I didn't read the first Ellie McDoodle book, but my 8 yo really loved it. She didn't like this one as much, but I did. A good story about how to adapt after a big move. And a girl who makes the best of it. And I love the drawings. :)
A good novel in verse about a girl and her adult friend building community. I wasn't wowed by it, but thought that there were some good ideas in it.
Zzzzzzz...
What?
Oh. You want me to review this book?
Well. Um. Well.
Yeah. About that interesting.
