not to be that person, but where's the smut (and the characterization and the progression and the-). 3 stars for the king of the dead opening his heart to a whiny persephone. gotta love a powerful man who's not afraid of showing vulnerability.
this is a retelling of my favorite book, so of course i didn't love it. i did expect to like it tho. unfortunately, the writing didn't let me forget that the story is based on a much better work. there were some attempts at greatness (sexual tension), which i appreciate, and a fake darcy is still a darcy, so i can't say that the book wasn't at least readable, but right when i was starting to take it seriously the plot went downhill. besides, there were some unnecessary choices from the beginning, such as changing the age of the characters: i feel like the younger elizabeth was just an excuse to make her stupid or naive. and why do that in a pride and prejudice retelling with a murder twist and a feminist focus? maybe to change the ending everyone expects, but the thing is: i read the whole book waiting for that ending, so i felt betrayed when i didn't get it. call me traditional.

muitos dos defeitos que citei na minha resenha de cruel prince continuam aqui, inclusive o de ritmo, mas o pior deles talvez seja o desperdício da tensão sexual entre jude e cardan. por um lado essa trilogia é um dos young adults menos castos que já li, mas por outro ela me dá TÃO POUCO. e com aquele final é muito enemies pra pouco lovers. i just wanted more of that "i want to tell you so many lies" shit.
como disse na resenha de cp, eu gosto muito da vulnerabilidade que a jude mostra ao leitor enquanto faz o que tem de ser feito. e neste livro eu senti pena dela tantas vezes, vendo-a guardar tudo pra si porque a única parente decente dela não tem um pingo de noção. mas não posso negar que a minha humana favorita faz algumas escolhas burras, ou deixa de fazer as espertas, como carregar um antídoto, por exemplo. também não dá pra levar a sério sua fama de assassina fria, porque literalmente não tem muita morte na qual essa fama possa se basear. mas o pior foi a jude ter deixado passar a primeira vez que taryn fingiu ser a irmã: nem um corte de cabelo a maria estrategista fez.
infelizmente, julgá-la por cair no papo do cardan eu não posso, porque também caí.
falando no cardan, foi meio burro da parte dele ter aceitado aquela ordem da "jude" no quarto dela la pro final. que espécie de rei abre mão de metade do exército sem uma justificativa convincente?
e o que o locke ainda tá fazendo vivo meu deus do céu. nem lembro da última vez que conheci um personagem tão ridículo quanto ele. uma tentativa de assassinato acontece, a gente pensa que estão TRAMANDO pra coitada da jude, mas é só o locke enchendo a paciência como sempre.
única coisa que me deu mais raiva foi o final. não por causa do cliffhanger, que é algo previsível num ya de fantasia. eu só não gosto da sensação de nadar, nadar e morrer na praia que este livro me deu.
esfriada a raiva pude raciocinar que deve ter algo a mais na ordem de exílio, mas aposto que a jude vai procurar vingança antes de perceber isso e deixar tanto ela quanto cardan vulneráveis a madoc e orlagh.
minha única previsão para queen of nothing é que a jude, sendo rainha, também está ligada à terra e tem poderes sobre ela assim como o cardan. meu único pedido é que a holly black largue de puritanismo e dê mais oportunidades pra nossa régia protagonista usufruir de seus direitos.

m/m fantasy shouldn't be this hard to like. i really wanted to love this one, but the author did everything she could to make each compelling element in her story (basically all of it) tiresome to read, and not just bc of the confunsing world-building. the crumbs of information weren't a surprise, and it's actually a good thing that Hale doesn't show us all of her cards right away, but even the characters and their relationships felt flat and forced, which is so frustrating bc this series has everything i like. so maybe i'll read the next book just to be sure i wouldn't like the other eight as well.

UGH. this book. it had so much potential. the beginning felt like a pretty solid four stars read, but dumb choices were made just for the sake of the plot that the author for some reason wanted to push; and the romance, which had seemed to be a promising source of FEELINGS, stopped delivering halfway through it (the couple reminded me of the one from Graceling, a book that had so little steam it made me sad). for a book five hundred pages long that is the first in a series, the tension, coherence and emotional attachment should have been there.
the cultural aspects surrounding the characters were well handled tho, including the fusion of religion and magic. it's something im not used to see in ya fantasy, and i think a lot of writers could learn from it (bc just dropping a human girl between fairies you swear to god are extremely evil is not world building).
