This is an okay Civil War story line, though it doesn't really seem to fit with Carol Danvers' general character. At least, from what I've read from her anyway. I don't think she would necessarily be so gung-ho for the government regulations--especially if it meant separating a family. So there's that.

The art was okay, and the story line with Rogue in the last few issues seemed to work better than the Civil War story. Overall, an okay read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury YA for an advanced copy of this book to review! While this book was tough to read at times, given what Carey has to go through as a genderqueer teen, I still think it’s an important story to add to the YA genre. Plus, reading about music and musicals is always an added bonus.

Let me start by saving Salvatore's writing is fantastic. They suck you in with Carey's story and the voice throughout the book is phenomenal. Carey (he/she/them, I use they/them for the purpose of this review) feels so realistic and almost leaps off the page. Carey's friends are also well-rounded, giving the reader a full cast of diverse characters. This was probably my favorite aspect of the book overall.

However, while Cris and Carey's relationship felt mostly realistic, it does get a little tiring by the end. It's messy and back and forth, which totally fits a teen relationship. But the miscommunication, I felt, went on a little too long for the book. Mostly, the pacing for that aspect of the plot felt a little off to me. The rest of the plot, however, does feel right pacing wise.

Going in, readers should also be warned that there is a lot of queer trauma in this book. There are also mentions of suicide and suicide ideation. The main antagonist, Mr. Jackson, is one still seen too often in schools and the ending in relation to him felt a little too convenient. And maybe not quite realistic? It just didn't quite fit with the rest of the story.

All in all, if you're someone that reads for voice and character, I absolutely recommend this book for that. And the musical references! There's a playlist at the end of the book I really appreciated, too. Can't wait to see what else Salvatore comes up with! 

As per usual, I'm left a little confused at the end of this Mindy McGinnis book, but that seems like par for the course. I know this is going to be a duology, so it makes sense that the end is somewhat open-ended and a bit confusing. The end also features a lot of flipping back and forth between characters, which adds to the overall confusion.

I will say that McGinnis is great at writing extremely dark characters, and this absolutely shines through the book. There isn't really anyone you want to root for, as everyone in the cast has a dark secret hidden somewhere. This is fast-paced and dark and very much feels like a Poe story. Perhaps not my favorite book so far this year, but you can't deny that it's well written and does suck you in.

Oh my goodness, my heart! I love Eric and Bitty and their relationship progresses so realistically in this book. Their challenges are ones that a lot of people from the LGBTQ+ community face and the story as a whole feels really authentic. While I don't know that much about hockey, that doesn't matter because you're still cheering for these boys and this team. I absolutely loved this and can see why it's so popular!

This was really well done! Packed with information that I hadn't previously known about women becoming astronauts, told in a way that's really accessible. I love this trend of presenting nonfiction books in a graphic novel format because it does make this information so much more accessible. The story of these women is so inspiring, and the writing and the art complement each other really well. Even though sometimes it's a little on the wordy side, that's to be expected to get all the information across. All in all, this was a great, informative read!

This isn't my favorite of Hutchinson's works (that title still goes to Elena Mendoza!), but it was definitely a fun ride. I listened to this on audio, but I'm kind of interested in seeing what the physical book looks like, with all the jumping around. The narrator for the audio was great, though!

While I didn't guess what was really happening (no spoilers), the ending fell a bit flat for me. It was an interesting, fun concept and definitely works for the Black Mirror angle they're using to promote the book. For me, the characters were the best part and I would definitely read about them again and again. Hutchinson nailed Noa's voice and this is what carries the story. Overall, this was a fun ride perfect as an introduction to sci-fi for someone who is looking to jump into the genre.

This book was packed with information! Some of the more recent history I knew, mostly because I've lived that. But some of the earlier history I didn't know, and a lot of it makes sense in relation to what's currently happening with transgender rights. I highly recommend this as a starting point if you're looking to learn more about transgender history.

There are also a lot of great books and resources in the back of the book for further reading. Definitely looking forward to hopefully diving into these at some point! Since gender/feminism reading is probably my go-to when reading nonfiction.

The story works here, even if the art isn't necessarily my favorite in this installment. Wolverine as a character just has a great voice, which stands out in this Civil War story. There were bits of the ending that were a little confusing to me, I think because of the way they were drawn. But it was entertaining overall. 

I loved this! Felipe's voice feels so real, and he's really just finding a way to be happy with himself. And find a way to tell the guy he likes that he has feelings for him. 

This story will resonate with a lot of teens, I think. There's also an excellent portrayal of therapy. Felipe's mom is also the best. All around, this was a quick read, but definitely a great one!

I actually highly recommend listening to the audiobook of this because it contributes to the experience. The narrator really pulled me into the story of this book, and what a story it was. There are so many layers to this story, and they were expertly executed. This is sort of young adult crime fiction, featuring the Native American culture in Northern Michigan. 

The beginning starts a bit slow, but once the mystery picks up, you won't be able to put this book down until the end. Definitely keep an eye out for it when it comes out in March!
