- Formatting was confusing to understand initially since it reads in columns versus rows

- Author's note at the end helped to explain the chapters, however, I think it would have served better as a "note to the reader" in the beginning of the book

A beautifully illustrated picture book that shares the stories from a classroom of children from different backgrounds, cultures, races, and identities. The author explains that this book is not comprehensive of the ethnicities and identities that make up the United States and encourages readers to explore many stories to learn about groups of people since one story does not define an entire group. 

 

The final section of this book takes a look at migration factors as well as touches more on the ethnicities and identities mentioned throughout the book.  

This book takes readers on a wild journey or determination, revenge, and rage as a new villain story unfolds. Laure Mesny has poured her life into the Paris ballet, scoring top marks in everything, only to be overlooked by the privileged, white elite when it matters most. This book is gory. Its gross. It shows how race still plays a prominent role in elite society and sports. Though the book was slow-moving at times, I think it still packs a horrific punch that will leave readers wondering what they would do for power. 

Another stellar historical novel from three (3)-time National Book Award finalist and Newbery Honor author Steve Sheinkin. This is the story of two (2) Jewish teens trying to survive in the horrific world of WWII. One teen is hiding in Hungary while the other is plotting to escape Auschwitz. 

 

 There are a handful of maps expertly placed through this book to help orient readers as to where the events are taking place. There are also ample source notes and bibliographies to help readers learn about sources and continue their research.

There is so much advice in here that, even as an adult, I read and said, “Wow...that is really compelling.” It’s Not Bragging if it’s True is a story that many tweens and teens can relate to and shares practical advice on how to become great. It is appropriate for elementary and junior high readers alike.  

This is a fine book. Though the information is unique, it moves pretty slow and there is not a ton of depth to the story. 

This book is tough. A unique, dystopian look at the flaws of criminal justice system. This book is gross and heartbreaking and frustrating and beautiful and powerful beyond words. 

This sequel brought me so much joy. Garlic and her friends are the best and I want to go on all their adventures. 

A lovely mashup of romance, baking, and magic!

 This is a powerfully adapted version of the New York Times bestselling book I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness. Author Austin Channing Brown recounts her experiences with race in America, something that started when she was just seven (7) years old.  

 

The topics covered in this book are important and heavy, and Channing Brown approaches them all in a way that is understandable and accessible for young readers. She does not shy away from the inequities that she has faced, balancing them nicely with affirmations and words of encouragement for the readers.  

 

This is a raw, powerful, and moving nonfiction memoir that has something for all readers. Very suitable for junior high readers.
