I liked the concept more than the execution - I tried this one before and I managed through it this time. Unfortunately, it was always going to fall short of the PsyCop series, especially with discussions of mental health. The cartoonish depiction of DID was the least of it.

The way Sherwood integrated the ethnicity of the characters into description and dialogue was also pretty off-putting.

Not actively bad, just not what I was looking for.

I'm glad I didn't start this series with Adam's book, because he would have annoyed me into forgoing the rest of it and I would have missed August. He's definitely my favorite.

This rating is solely for how much I enjoyed reading and less so about the strength of the plot or the world-building. It's like the Umbrella Academy meets Dexter but without the depth of either. I can't complain. 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn't mind approximately 100 more pages of just world-building, but the essence of Jaq and Lily's story is not based around their otherworldly nature. It is a destructive passion that exists regardless.

I commend the author for just an absurd amount of gourd related puns and prose.  Unfortunatel, I was confronted with my worst enemy in an erotic novel: sugar in vaginas.
informative medium-paced

Very informative, but dragged in a few places. I'm not sure I totally agree with his exceptionally broad definition of cannibalism, but it was a fun walk through of natural history (both human and nonhuman).
