I just didn't vibe with the main character, which is disappointing because I loved this author's take on urban-fantasy and was excited to see an even longer series in the genre.

Meh. I get the point they were trying to make with the mating question and his experiences running with wolves, but I don't have to like it.

Also, his sidekick is annoying.

Exploring Diem's issues would have been an interesting exercise, even as a romance, if I actually liked his love interest Tallus at all.

The dialogue was too much - you can convey awkwardness without relaying every single pause or one word answer. I also like it when romantic interests are on similar footing - if Marcel had been confident & competent, Death being ... Death wouldn't have been an issue. But he's a mess and it gives Death too much power in the dynamic for my liking.

Not actively bad, just not what I was looking for.
