Well, this was certainly... A book, I guess.
It was very boring and didn't get the least bit interesting until the heist and, even then, it quickly dropped off again. The plot was boring. The characters were boring. Even their drama was boring. Hell, even the non-human creature was boring!
And the sexual shit? Completely unneeded. It felt like it was thrown in there because A) sex sells and B) to make the book longer. It was completely unnecessary.
I would not have read this book if it wasn't part of a reading challenge.

I have loved goblins since my world of warcraft days which, despite being an alliance main, I had a few goblins. They're adorable, funny, sarcastic little chaos gremlins and I love them. They often get the short end of the stick in media, though - monsters, villains, evil, etc.
So, when I saw that this book featured a goblin who becomes emperor, I was sold. And a goblin that is HALF ELF?? That's kinda neat. The characters are quite likeable and, despite having a pretty shitty hand, Maia(?) is a good guy, a good emperor, who does his best. He seems to struggle with doing what feels right versus what's expected of him and he often finds a nice bit of middle ground between the two.
This was a really good, well written book that kept my attention. It made me laugh. It made me smile. It left me shocked and intrigued. The only real complaint I have is the whole "we/us" options when they speak. If I understand correctly, it's a formality/respect thing?? But it feels strange to me and was quite jarring. It is said A LOT in the book and I found myself stopping multiple times because it felt off.
"Who the hell is 'we'?" I kept asking at first and then it switched to, "It's such a strange choice I wonder why the author chose that." Very distracting.
Other than that, no complaints. I adore the main character.
I will leave off with my favorite line from the whole book:
"We are perfectly well!" "You're the color of old cheese." 🧀

I do not care that this is a children's book it is adorable and I love Pete ❤️
Also, just the mental image of a STUDENT, cat or human, taking a snowplow and cleaning the streets just to get back to school is hilarious.

I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't. This book is filled with unnecessary, boring information dumps that don't add to the story and can easily be cut out. I made it 35% of the way through this book and I wanted to throw myself into a wall. It felt like I had been listening for days.
I always force myself to finish books I start out of principle, even books I dislike. I just can't with this one. I think I made it over five hours and I was like, "Okay, I can do this, we're almost done, right? ........ Right?! 🫠 WRONG! 11 hours to go, baby, and I already wanna die, woo!
I give up, this book has won. I'm throwing in the towel.

So, this is a book I physically read so many years ago that I can't even recall what year it was. I assume it was before 2018 because that's when I started tracking my reading on Goodreads.
This book easily became my favorite, and the second, too, so much so that I never read the third book because I loved the characters so much that I was worried what would become of them haha
Since there's no date, since it's been so long and since I never finished the series, I decided I would dive into the inkworld once more, this time as audiobooks. I was a bit concerned at first, worried my favorite book might not be my favorite still after so much time had passed.
I am happy that I was wrong. It's still an incredible book with a really cool plot and likeable characters. The author is truly a magical wordsmith and I'm thankful to have such a wonderful series to get lost in.

Such a lovely story! So well written with interesting characters and a plot that keeps you listening. I have to say, I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this.
Also, I hate Susan's family. How she could be raised by such a horrible woman only to turn out quite the opposite is beyond me! At least she had a loving father and Jacob by her side. I'm really glad the author included what happened to them at the end, it was such a sweet ending.
