⚠️ WARNING! This review may contain spoilers, read at your own risk. I also cuss a lot.

I found this book at Costco and I was intrigued by the cover (funny story, I didn't realize the book I was buying was book 2 of the series because it said The Last so we had to go back to find book 1 and it took a minute for my dumbass to locate it.)

The first thing I will say about this book is that it was hard to put down. I really enjoyed reading it and I found myself in the endless loop of "one more chapter" for a while. I usually read before bed and I was soooo tired, but I didn't want to stop reading. I needed to know what happened next. The characters are also loveable and I had no problem with any of the troupe (except one and for good damn reason!)

《You saved my life. You can't eat me.》

This is the single BEST line in the entire book. I laughed so hard when I read it lmao At this point in the story, Tobble was my ultimate character. He's so brave and loyal despite being small and limited in what he can do. He can really teach people how to be brave despite your limitations. You don't have to be the strongest to be a hero! He's also adorable as fuck, okay. He is precious and I would die for him.

《What purpose does that serve?》 《None whatsoever.》

You cannot tell me that Tobble is not a gem, a comedian, a precious being that we must protect at all costs. I just wanna hug him, he's so precious

This was a pretty quick read but I admit that I also didn't want to put it down. I was quite anxious and this book did a good job of distracting me!

I didn't have too many thoughts while reading this, but one of the main thoughts came from the very first chapter. I think I've read too much clichéd shit because I kept waiting for Nancy to feel or act jealous every time Ned complimented Payton, which he did A LOT. I was pleasantly surprised and happy that that didn't happen.

As I was reading, I zeroed in on my own suspect pretty early on. I don't know if I just had a lucky guess or if it was obvious in the book but I ended up being right.

Overall, this is a fun and quick read for mystery fans and, of course, fans of Nancy Drew.

!! (SKIP THIS LINE TO AVOID THE SPOILER) !! - I felt like the culprit was Payton

I received this book via an Instagram giveaway. It's a quick read with beautiful illustrations and it's about young Hédi and how she was taken away by Hitler's soldiers. That must have been terrible for everyone, but thinking about experiencing it as a child... it makes me want to cry. It's a sad tale with beautiful illustrations to help drive home the words that accompany them. It's a tale that shows just how important our pets are and how much they truly impact out lives.

I will say this, though. I think $18 is a bit of a steep price, and I certainly wouldn't have paid that for such a short book. With that said, I'm thankful I won it because it will be a nice addition to my library

⚠️ WARNING! This review may contain spoilers, read at your own risk. I also cuss a lot. I am not a professional reviewer. I just read books and tell my thoughts about them, whatever they may be.

Let me start by saying that this is one of my FAVORITE movies and I didn't know until recently that it even had a book version. Inwas quite excited but also quite worried knowing the track record with book versus movie. Now, it has been a LONG time since I watched the movie and my memory is quite trash so I don't remember much of what happened but, after finishing the book, I feel as if the stories are quite different yet still the same - like alternate universes. Both are equally amazing, in my opinion, and I don't believe one is better or worse than the other. I do have a strong desire to rewatch the movie though haha

Sophie is a very likeable character and I fell more in love with her after reading the book. Howl doesn't seem quite as charming to me in the book, but Calcifer is still amazing and easily my favorite character

Let me start by saying that I was originally intrigued by this book for two reasons: because I follow the author on IG and because of the beautiful cover. Then I read the description and I was quite fascinated about the story he had spun. I LOVE the cover and the material it's made of, though I'm not sure what it is. The only thing is that oily fingers can easily mar it, but they usually wipe away, thankfully! I almost decided to read this with gloves to preserve the cover haha But what is a book without proof that someone has read it?

It surprised me when the dad knew about Domino. When he first appeared, I couldn't help wondering if he was the bad guy, if he was the minotaur or if he was something else entirely.

My least favorite character is easily the teacher. She was a total bitch to Emma for no reason. She acts like Emma is this terrible child and she hasn't even done anything that bad. I was glad when she got taken, not even gonna lie. I wouldn't be surprised if she turned out to be with the Lord of Light. What a terrible teacher.

I almost lost it when Dory told Emma that Clarence didn't exist. We both believed her and then she was like, "ha gotcha bitch" and I wanted to scream

Before we begin, I have no mind for what's considered a spoiler and what isn't so, fair warning - POSSIBLE SPOILERS ahead. I also use bad language, so read at your risk.

Let me start by saying that holy shit is this book long. Remind me to never pick up a 500+ page book again, good lord. I thought I would never finish it! I also want to say that I watched the movie first and later found out that there was a book about it so I was excited because I loved the movie. History is not my strongest interest and most are boring to me. I have so many problems in my life, I don't care to read about the problems of my ancestors, but there are a few points in history that, if told right, really interest me. This is one of them.

John Guy did an excellent job of going through fact and fiction to provide the best possible account of Mary's life and the problems she faced. And boy is it a ride.

Even now, after finishing the book, I'm left wondering if Mary was truly a victim or not. I feel like she was a victim of greedy assholes who cared only for their own wants and using her a simple stepping stone despite being a goddamn queen. How could this shit happen to her? She's a QUEEN, is that not the highest role possible? How could they get away with so much shit against her without even facing consequences for it? I felt so annoyed and angry while I read this book and I truly hope that the rebel lords and that dickbag Cecil are burning in hell for their treachery.

I feel like I didn't fully understand this book for two reasons:
1. I don't understand how ANYONE understood what people were saying back then. When he included inserts of what they wrote, I had to read it several times before my brain could process the words as they were written.
2. So many words I've never heard of or couldn't pronounce. If I had written down each one to look up and try to learn the meaning of, I think I would have had a book of my own lol John Guy is much smarter than I am.

I really can't stand the rebel lords. They are power-hungry bastards and THEY GOT AWAY WITH IT. That's what pisses me off the most. And Cecil, I fucking HATE Cecil and to think that he had a wonderful life after Mary's execution frustrates me to no fucking end. And And HER SON. Like, what the fuck, kid? It's not her fault you never got to know her, SHE WAS FECKIN' IMPRISONED HALF HER LIFE. For him to completely denounce her, I.... I am getting way too heated over this.

Elizabeth wasn't innocent either. She refused to meet with Mary because she was a fucking coward. She IMPRISONED her because she was naive enough to think that her beloved cousin would actually help her and then she was shocked when Mary "accepted" a plot for her assassination. Anyone that trusted her and then got imprisoned for half their feckin' life for it would eventually grow desperate enough to agree to an assassination to find their freedom. And then she wanted her murdered in the middle of the night without claiming responsibility! The most cowardly queen in the entire world. What a bitch.

And who is she to dictate who Mary can and can't marry?? It isn't her life and they are BOTH queens on equal footing, she has no fucking right. Elizabeth clearly thought she was higher in status than she was. Pathetic.

Mary wasn't innocent, either, though. She trusted time and time again even after being betrayed. She made questionable choices on several occassions, as well. Still, she got royally fucked over by all fronts. From the time she was a child, she was being targeted. Cecil had a serious hard on for her, it's fucking disgusting.

It just goes to show how terrible human beings are. Even family will betray you in a second if they think they can get something out of it. Mary's biggest flaw was that she was far too trusting, too loving for this world. Everyone she knew, that she trusted, betrayed her except for her own mother and the leader of the four Maries. Just shows me that my hatred of human beings is just.

Kids growing up always want to be princesses and princes, kings and queens, but they never realize that in being so, you become a target for everyone. Humans covet power above all else and they will do anything to get it, even if they have to destroy their own family. Mary's story is proof of this.

Wherever her soul may be today, I hope she finds peace.

Another thing I'd like to mention - fuck religion. That's one of the main reasons there was so much turmoil. "My religion is the only religion." "My religion is right, fuck your religion." It's so fucking stupid. What does one person believing something have to do with you? In my opinion, Cecil was so insecure in his own religion and in himself that he was TERRIFIED that Mary's religion would overcome his own and it's stupid. Who cares what someone else believes? Live your own damn life and stop worrying so much about what other people are doing. If you truly believe that your religion is true and just, you don't give a fuck what other people are doing with their own beliefs (unless it's something like killing others who don't believe the same as you, then you should care.) To me, that just proves have pathetic Cecil was. Can you tell I hate him? If not, well... I hate him.

I don't think I've ever gotten so emotionally involved in a historic story before but jesus I hate how this played out. So frustrating!

This book is super detailed and it's obvious that the author put in a lot of effort to get all the facts and to find the proof to tie everything together. He did a great job and, while it was hard for me to read because of it's length, I'm glad I did and I think he deserves praise for this.

Also, fuck Cecil.

WARNING: I have no sense of what is a spoiler and what isn't, so this review may contain spoilers. I also cuss like a sailor, so read at your own risk. I am not a professional, I just like to read and share my thoughts on them.

Why are half stars not an option?? I feel bad giving it 3 stars, but I can't bring myself to give it 4. I want to give 3.5 stars, but since half stars are not an option, this will have to do. I received the Advanced Reader's Copy via a giveaway and I wish I was being paid to review it, but I'm not lol

Now, I'm not very big on vampire stories, it's just not really my thing, but I figured as long as they don't sparkle, I can handle it. The cover is nice - it's simple, not overcrowded but also not boring. It draws you in and makes you wonder what's going to happen. The intro letter in the book is also pretty cool and I like the author's personality. She seems really interesting.

The book started off as a real page-turner and I was intrigued. It didn't get boring, but it felt like it dragged on longer than it needed to like it was being stretched to hit a page goal which was kind of annoying.

My biggest annoyance with this book is the fact that they keep bringing up the fact that she is a girl.

"Nobody's going to execute a girl, no matter what she did."

Um, excuse me? She can literally commit murder and get away with it JUST because she's a chick? Mkay. Sure. It was fine the first couple of times they mentioned this, but it was repeated so much that it got really annoying and frustrating to read. If the girl is guilty of a crime, she deserves to be punished for it whether she has a D or a V. She can't be guilty because she's a girl? Bullshit.

I mean, this book feels like it goes out of its way to make us realize that Marie is a girl. Like yeah, she's a girl. We get it. Girls do no wrong. It's impossible. All women are innocent and should never be punished even when they commit mass murder.

One thing that stood out to me is when Marie said that the killer drinks the blood. Maybe it's because Jensen is young, but I feel like MOST people wouldn't immediately jump to the idea of a vampire when they hear that. Would they not just think it's a sick person? Or someone who thinks/wants to be a vampire? This boy just straight up jumps to the conclusion of vampire even though that's not what she said. She didn't DENY it, but when she first mentioned it, she simply said "he drank it" and HE is the one that said vampire. I don't know why but this part irked me.

[No jury would buy that once they saw Marie, so young and so little. So female.]

I - efhbsjndkl WHAT. I never thought one sentence could bring me so much pain, so much cringe. "So female"... what the fuck does that even mean? You're kidding, right? That's a joke, right? Are you dead ass right now? Either the author is a serious feminist or she's trying to capitalize on how butthurt women are these days which, honestly, isn't a bad play if you're wanting to make money. Nothing against the author here, but I honestly hate it. This gave me flashbacks to the feminist mess that was The Lost Apothecary. I will never recover from that book.

I'm not sure if this copy has been edited since it's an ARC, but the line breaks for their conversations confused me on more than one occasion. Now, I understand when someone is literally speaking a fucking novel that you have to line break so it's not this huge wall of text, but the line breaks were happening after just one sentence and you know my dumbass didn't notice the lack of end quotes so I just assumed it was the next person talking but it wasn't and my brain had to stop multiple times to reread it trying to figure out who the fuck was talking.

Percy was my favorite character and really the only character I liked in this story. I didn't hate the other characters, but they just didn't really stand out to me in any way. Except for Pilson, fuck that guy. He's a douche.

I didn't like the ending, either. It felt... I'm not sure how to explain it but it felt as if it just ending too abruptly, I guess? It made the story feel pointless which I get - life doesn't always have happy endings where everything is tied up all nice and neat, but this isn't real life. It's based on a real-life case, but it's still fiction and I like my fiction to wrap up because I linger on the questions for fucking ages before finally moving on.

Overall, this book wasn't terrible, but it wasn't an enjoyable read for me. It just felt very bland.

Before we begin, let me say that I am NOT a professional book reviewer. I just enjoy reading and sharing my thoughts about them. I also have no sense of what a spoiler is, so read at your own risk. I cuss like a sailor, too.

So, I've had this book for a while now because I really enjoy the MCU. I've recently caught up with the movies and decided I would finally read this and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed this book, too. The author did a good job of keeping the Avengers in character. There were a couple spots that were hard for me to read simply because, instead of writing one sentence, the author broke up a sentence into multiple sentences. I don't know if that makes sense? Basically, it felt like the two sentences should be combined into one because the stop between them made me pause and broke my immersion a bit.

One of the first things that threw me for a loop was where Hawkeye and Widow landed. When Hawkeye fought fucking dinosaurs, I lost my shit. Since when did Marvel have dinosaurs?! I had to stop and look up the Savage Land and dinosaurs in Marvel because I was losing my mind lmao

{"What did he want?" asked Fury.
"Ultron? He wanted to rule the world."
"Everybody wants to rule the world."}

He said it! He said the thing! I don't know why but I felt so excited when I read this part haha

{"How'd you get the A.I.M guy to talk?" asked Fury.
"Arrows are pointy," replied Hawkeye.}

I felt like I was watching one of the movies, man. Their lines are brilliant and perfectly in character. This is one of my favorite lines because I actually laughed at this (which helped because I was suffering high anxiety at the time.)

{The sentries had brought star systems to their knees.
But the Hulk... was the Hulk.}

Not gonna lie, I snorted at this one. The truth of this is just so on point that it's hilarious. Also #HulkSavesTheDay.

{"You want to do this or shall I?" he asked.
"Be my guest," said Cap.
"I think it's your turn," said Stark.
"Just do it," Cap said.
"It should come from you," said Stark. "It sounds better coming from you."
"Gentlemen..." growled Fury.
Stark smiled and nodded to Cap.
"Okay," said Captain America. "Avengers... assemble."}

Fucking iconic, bro. I want to see these two in a movie fighting over who should say it. Has this happened? I hope so. I didn't really like how he added the speaking tags after each line. It feels unnecessary after the first time because we know it's them speaking. This happens a lot throughout the book to the point where I kind of stopped reading them lol Unless the character did something other than just saying it, I ignored the speech tags.

Another thing that was hard to read in this book was the placement of the sentences. Typically, when you write something like [Cap looked at her.] and then you have him speak, it would be on the same line, right? But it's not. It goes like this:

{Cap looked at her.
"We know where he went?" he asked.}

When this happens, it feels like a character break, as if the baton is being passed on to the next character but then it's still him. This happens a lot through this book and my dumbass brain had trouble keeping up with it because I expected the next character to be speaking only for it to be the previous character so I had to re-read it.

{Cap and Iron Man looked at each other.
"Your turn," said Iron Man.
"I did it last time."
Tony Stark sighed.
"Okay," he said. He turned toward the others. He turned toward the others. "Avengers?" he called. "Guess what I'm going to say next."}

Overall, this book was pretty awesome. Then again, I'm a bit biased because, like I said, I love the MCU - and yes, I know the MCU is technically just the movies and TV shows but I'm including the other media because MU doesn't sound as cool. One thing I kept trying to figure out was where this book fit into the Marvel timeline and if it did at all.

Now, I've never read the comics (aside from Deadpool) and I've only seen the movies and some of the shows which I know doesn't cover the entire universe. I'm really interested to learn the timeline of all Marvel content, including the books and comics, too. It seems like this book would be somewhere in the middle of the timeline, before Infinity War. But... it's been a while since I've seen the movies at the beginning and doesn't Pietro die in the same movie he appears in? In the book, he is alive and well and very much a part of the Avengers. This was confusing to me.

I guess that kind of comes along with the territory, though. When you have a universe that is so damn vast and you have all these people coming together to make content for the same characters, it makes sense that some of the information wouldn't line up. I wish the full timeline of Marvel was in order and made sense but I know that's not the case and is probably impossible to accomplish, especially now. One can dream though.

I definitely recommend this book if you love Marvel or even if you just love superheroes.

Before I begin, I would like to say that I am not a professional reviewer. I just enjoy reading books and sharing my thoughts about them. I also have no sense for what counts as a spoiler and I cuss like a sailor, so read at your own risk!

I rate this book 4.5 / 5 ★ and I received this book through a giveaway.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book or not, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. First off, I felt anger for like 90% of this book, not because it's bad or anything, but because of the blatant disrespect that Elizabeth is given despite being a businesswoman. I know women were treated badly back in the 50s but holy shit man, was it really that fucking bad? They completely steamrolled over this woman, acting as if she's as dumb as a sack of bricks and as fragile as porcelain.

And the cop, man. The fucking. Cop. He is TRASH. Period. Though, I guess I can understand why by the end of the book but when I was reading, I hated him. He was ignorant, did a terrible job as a cop, and he deadass set his mind on ONE option and refused to explore any other angle. I hate this man and I hope he suffers.

Normally when I read murder mysteries, I choose suspects that I think may be guilty but for this book... I don't know what happened, but I didn't suspect ANYONE. No one felt like a suspect to me and I just kept waiting for them to introduce someone that might be behind the murder but it just didn't happen and I was surprised when things fell into place. Not sure if that means the mystery is top-tier or terrible lol

Another thing I noticed is that this book is super boring in the beginning, and the murder doesn't even occur until page 55 which, I guess is normal, but it annoyed me because the beginning was so painful for me to read. It was boring and didn't really hook me. I think it was just before the halfway point that the book started to pick up, like the train finally got rolling and I read quite a bit of it back to back without stopping. I was surprisingly hooked. I can't say this book was amazing but it was a good read.

There were a few points that really had me laughing. For example, on page 170 when Elizabeth finds out about her mother's stalker and thinks he's a good suspect so she shows the picture to that dumbass chief and he's just like:

{"How long have you been a communist, Miss Peters?"}

I lost it at this line. I had to put the book down and legit take a moment. I wanted to STRANGLE this man. Another moment I had to take a moment for was on 176:

{"You're doing a good job. For a girl, I mean."
"Gee, thanks."}

I HAD THE SAME REACTION AS ELIZABETH. Men deadass used to think they were on top of the world, huh.

{Little noodles cut to look like letters of the alphabet floated in the soup.}

I read this line and IMMEDIATELY thought of those cheap ass 90 cent cans of alphabet soup that you usually eat when you're a kid. But I don't know anything about fancy rich people, so I just let this go until:

{The consomme was largely tasteless and, unlike here, my kitchen reserved alphabet noodles for the children's dining room.}

SHE SAID IT. SHE SAID WHAT I WAS THINKING. It's like me and her are on the same wavelength, it was crazy.

And finally, the best line in the whole ass book, delivered by the glamor queen herself:

{"Elizabeth!" my mother called. "What on earth is your girdle doing in the cutlery drawer?"}

I deadass SNORTED at this line. And it's the last line of the book which is fucking glorious. This is literally the BEST way to end a book and it's the best. And I don't even know what a fucking girdle is!

Finally, I want to take a moment to talk about how the chief tried to make it a communist thing. Now, I definitely ain't the sharpest crayon in the box, but I have no idea what communism is. I looked it up and read the definition. Still don't get it. I even looked up "explain communism like I'm 5" and still don't really get it. The most I can get from it is "everyone owns the same items" like that one NAP from Sims 4 where other sims can just come and take your shit and use it as they please, but I don't know man.

Maybe it's because I don't understand it or because I don't have much knowledge about history, but it felt like people were going nuts just at the mention of the word. It seemed so fucking strange to me and they acted like anyone who believes in communism is the literal devil. I don't get it and I ended up scratching my head many times through this, but I don't think that's any fault of the book.

So yeah, this book isn't bad and if you can overlook the sexism of the 50s, then it's a nice little murder mystery.
