This book was so good, I can't wait for the next one! It was well written, the characters all had great personalities without being annoying, the plot was interesting and who doesn't love a cute, tiny little tiger-striped squirrel?

I thought it was really funny when he tried to outrun the courier. It reminds me of playing Skyrim and that damned courier literally trekking over mountains just to catch you! It was also a nice change to find a protagonist that didn't immediately recognize the monster and list off all the things he knows about it. Usually, protags are well versed in monsters from all over, so much so that it can be annoying. It was a nice change of pace to have a hero that had no idea what it was. It made him endearing, like he's not some all powerful being but someone human that can learn and grow despite his years as a knight.

I think my favorite scene was easily the first time he met the squirrel (I forget the name, I'm sorry!) It was such a cute, comical scene that I couldn't help but snort. I think that's when I knew this book was going to be amazing.

"And where is it now? Where is your treasure now?" "I don't know." "What?!" This is a friendship I can get behind, oh my god. I felt bad for Will but, at the same time, I couldn't help but laugh at his annoyance.

"Is this true, knight? Are you sir William Hornsby, the slayer of the whatever and the liberator of who knows where?" This author is so good at adding lines like this. They're so funny to me and they really make the story more enjoyable. I love the lighthearted tone it has while also delving into serious topics and battles.

And this might be my favorite line from the whole book:

[The phrase meant something like "nature's grace." It referred to the inevitability of death, of nature allowing you a break from the struggle of life.]

This book was amazing and it's the perfect pick-me-up that I really needed after a stressful few months. I'm excited for the next book, to learn more of this world and learn more about William. He's a great main character, someone I would love to be best friends with haha

I almost forgot to add that the narrator did a fantastic job, as well! His voice was very calming, but he portrayed the emotions of the characters well and his different voices were well done.

Listen, I know I'm not the sharpest cookie in the shed, but I just spent 20 hours listening to this book and I still have no feckin' idea about what's going on. I don't understand the world or the characters. All I got was "bad guy does bad things" and "good guy fights bad guy." Nothing else made sense to me.

Now, I'm not saying this book is bad. Just... maybe if you're dumb like me, you should pick up a different one lmao

It was a bit disappointing. I was expecting the cats to have more of a role, more presence in this book than they did. They were more like props, mentioned a few times but they didn't actually do anything. They got sent to the homes of people with problems and then those people droned on about their problems while occasionally giving attention to the cats.

As someone who loves cats and doesn't very much like humans, this book left me feeling very disappointed.

I'm not sure what happened here. The first half of this book was amazing. It was hilarious and witty and I loved the depiction of hell. I laughed so many times in the first half and I was fully ready to give this 5 stars and demand it be made into a movie or TV series.

The second half, though... I don't know, the second half just got boring and didn't hit the same way as the first half. It wasn't as funny or witty. There were a few wonderfully sarcastic moments, of course, but it had dropped dramatically from the first half.

This was a really cute book and the narrator did a great job. I figured the pets were going to try and break their owner out of the hospital, so I was surprised to learn that that was NOT the angle the author chose lol It was a good surprise, though.

The animals are cute and the cat is, of course, the best character. Though the octopus is a close second.

Another great read from Bain, who is a master of keeping these wonderful characters in character. This one tugs at your heart because of Frank's involvement and I found myself smiling at Jessica's interactions with him. I'm not even a big fan of kids, really, but this was still cute.

Plus, Jessica truly understands my writer's soul haha

"Writers get lonely. Writing is a lonely profession."

I never thought of it that way but goddamn if it ain't true.

"I call it the Fletcherita." "Is that related to the margherita?" "4th cousin once removed."

I laughed far too hard at this comment lmao The humor in this book was so lovely and it was truly a relaxing, cozy experience.

"Any idiot could have learned those lines by now."

Hi, yeah, idiot here πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ I promise you it would have taken far longer than a week for me to learn those lines. I really didn't like this character, she was such a jerk. Like, I get the profession is stressful but screaming at a 9 year old boy? For something he didn't even do?

Girl needs therapy. Or maybe a new hobby.

I've admired this author for many years because of this quote:

β€œStart writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” ― Louis L'Amour

This quote has literally saved my writing so I've admired him for a long time. This is the first book of his I've gotten around to reading and I think he's a really great writer. I was surprisingly interested despite not being fond of multiple main characters in a single book.

I liked picturing the settings that he placed his characters in and how the characters connected with each other. It kept my attention easily.

Plus, there's this quote which I absolute adore:

"Are they impossible? If you can dream of them, maybe they are possible. And, in the meantime, they help you to be happy."

This man is a fantastic writer and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of his wonderful books.
