TESS OF THE ROAD by Rachel Hartman

Published: 2018
Genre: Fantasy
Age-range: Young Adult
Series: #1
Pages: 521
Themes:
teenage pregnancy, losing a child
, a world that surpresses females
Setting: Kingdom of Goredd

RATING

Main character: 8 Tess
Side characters: 8 Names of ones I liked
Writing: 8
Plot: 7
Enjoyment: 8
Atmosphere: 8
Intrigue: 7

Total: 7,74 --- 4 stars

Notes: I haven't read Seraphina and it didn't hinder my enjoyment, the main character could be a bit unlikable, especially in the beginning because theoretically the whole book could have been skipped if the main character would have accepted an offer, but the book is not about the plot - not at all - its about Tess and her growing into herself and coping with her past, she has a lot to deal with, I enjoyed reading about the Quigutl companion, it was a very slow read but the audiobook really made me like this more

Fun Fact: it has a cast of characters page (or three :D) and a glossary

THE DREADFUL TALE OF PROSPER REDDING by Alexandra Bracken

Published: 2017
Genre: Fantasy/ Paranormal
Age-range: Middle Grade
Series: #1
Pages: 362
Themes: Family feud, a demon inside the main character
Setting: USA

RATING

Main character: 7 Prosper Redding/ Alastor
Side characters: 6 Nell, Uncle Barnabas
Writing: 8
Plot: 7
Enjoyment: 7
Atmosphere: 6
Intrigue: 7

Total: 6,85 --- 3,5 stars

Notes: I was kind of disappointed with this book - it fell flat and didn't reach my expectations. I wasn't a big fan of main or side characters, I had to look them up because I forgot their names, the only character I liked was Alaster/ the malefactor :D, the chapters from his perspective made me laugh out loud and he is the reason I'm going to be reading the sequel, I liked the animal companion of Nell, plot was nothing special and I had hoped for it to be more atmospheric, its not bad though its just that I had higher expectations because of Nevermoor and its brilliance.

THE TELLING by Alexandra Sirowy

Published: 2016
Genre: Mystery
Age-range: Young Adult
Pages: 387
Themes: Grief for her step brothers death, love between step siblings, some murders and a mentally unstable main character
Setting: USA

RATING

Main character: 5 Lana
Side characters: 2 Faceless people to me
Writing: 7
Plot: 6
Enjoyment: 7
Atmosphere: 10
Intrigue: 8
Logic: 2

Total: 5,87 --- 3 stars

Notes: Lana is an unlikeable character and I don't have a problem with that, I admit I would have liked her character more if she would have chosen differently in the end - I think then this book could have blown me away, I saw coming that  Ben was alive and behind all this, mentally unstable and such and I would seriously have loved for her to ride into the sunset with him - she was so unlikeable why not go all the way and make her the villain in the end?. Since it's a mystery novel intrigue was there because I was hoping the end would be different. I gave only 2 points for logic because: I didn't understand in the least why a love between step siblings is so bad?? And why she never talked to him about it, if their relationship to one another was so good???. Sadly I didn't care for main or side characters until the end. But the atmosphere was very good, especially in the audiobook.

A COURT OF FROST AND STARLIGHT by Sarah J. Maas

Pages: 229
Themes: PTSD, Rebuilding after a war

RATING

Main character: 8 Feyre, Rhys, Nesta, Cassian
Side characters: 9 Azriel, Mor, Amren
Writing: 8
Plot: 7
Enjoyment: 9
Atmosphere: 7
Intrigue: 7

Total: 7,85 --- 4 stars

Notes: This was just a little in between story for fans who want to read more about their favorite characters but I didn't mind that. I still don't like Feyre, but I love Cassian so much. I don't like Nesta either but oh well. The new audiobook narrator is really good in my opinion. I will continue with the next book and see how I like it. If its from Nestas POV I will probably not like it.

BINTI by Nnedi Okorafor

Published: September 2015
Genre: Dystopian
Age-range: Adult
Series: # 1
Pages: 90
Themes: Violence
Setting: Dystopian World

RATING

Main character: 5 (Binti)
Side characters: 7 (Some alien creatures?)
Writing: 4
Plot: 5
Enjoyment: 5
Atmosphere: 7
Diversity: 10 (own voices POC MC)
Intrigue: 4

Total: 5,87 --- 3 stars

Notes: The writing wasn't for me sadly which is why 90 pages felt so long. I had to force myself to continue. I didn't particularly care for the main character and I couldn't even really picture the alien creatures. And the ending felt very awkward.

Initial Reaction: I have to say I don’t quite understand this 🤔 but I may want to continue I'm not sure
