This is not a book for a historian. This is a book for an economist, for it's difficult to understand without the math behind it. Also, the formatting of body text to footnote was terrible!

I wanted a solution to the problem of class divisions by the end of reading. But this book is not that kind of book. Instead, it's a excellently-written narrative about the lowest rung of white American society and its history tracing all the way back to Jamestown and Plymouth.

I can't say I enjoyed this book, as who enjoys a book pointing out your race? That doesn't mean I wasn't glad I read it- there were some eye-opening passages in the book, for sure. It was thought provoking and therefore was a slow read. I wished there had been more concrete examples and ideas for how to move forward.
