Meh. It just was really boring to me. 

It was a DNF for me. It frustrated me that it was taking too long to the action and it was very much a telling instead of showing novel which is unfortunate because I've liked this author before.

Too much Malay slang for me to understand what was going on.

I just could not get into this book. Too pedestrian to be academic but too academic to be pedestrian maybe?

Hated the humor. It felt very cheap and rambling. Perhaps it would be better as an audiobook?

The tagline made me think this was going to be a lot more culinary history and a lot less genealogy. I found it impossible to keep track of all the generations and their connections. Just not for me.

This was a memoir but didn't feel like one. The first 100 or so pages are a disjointed genealogical story of Faust's family. But even as we get to the history she lived, it feels like it's being told from the clinical eye of a historian - it reads much more like a history of the times (and not a well-written one) than a memoir. I couldn't get over the detached writing.
