I wanted to like this but it felt a little gender stereotype-y for me. But the illustrations are cute!

Unfortunately, a good chunk of this is already outdated (FeeX no longer exists for free fee research for example). Additionally, her discussion of asking for other benefits rubbed me the wrong way. Very few people can actually negotiate this. Certainly not local, state, or federal government employees or those with a collective bargaining agreement. 

I found myself skipping thru parts of Part 2 - I didn't feel particularly compelled to know every detail of his time in the Army. But I will say, his voice is wonderful to listen to!

Love, loved this book! I knew about the  Freedom Summer but never knew they also created libraries as part of the effort. I'd love to assign a chapter when I teach intro Library Science classes again!

There were times I thought the lyrcisim was going to pull me out of reckoning but I found Smith's descriptions actually helped me think more deeply about his questions by humanizing his guides and those he had conversations with. A beautiful must read of reckoning with our past.
