I'm a fan of Christmas stories and I really liked this one. It's heartwarming, entertaining and it made me feel the Christmas spirit even if we are in August.
I loved the well written cast of characters, I rooted for them, and the engrossing and lovely plot.

I don't know how to start this review as I found the story enjoyable and think there's a lot of potential but there's also a lot of issues, more than the usual series debut.
The pro:
- The setting is lovely and vivid
- Nigel the cat was one of my favorite characters
- The mystery, even if some parts were over my suspension of belief, was solid and kept me guessing
- Some characters were faulted and this was a refreshing change
The cons:
- The style of writing seemed "strange" with a lot of repetitions
- Some of the characters are a bit mono-dimensional
- Sometimes the plot is confused and too many subplots, some of them distract you from the main story
I'm curious about the next instalment as I think this could become an excellent series
I think it can be recommended keeping in mind all the issues.

I'm a fan of Lavie Tidhar and I'm a fan of Arthurian sagas and these factors made this book one of my must read in 2020.
I had high expectations and I can say I wasn't disappointed.
I inhaled this book as it's powerful with its retelling of well known story and making it fresh and enthralling.
It's dark, gritty and violent and I loved every moment.
Arthur, Merlin and all the characters in this saga are perfect for the dark age as they are stripped of all the Middle Age chivalry ideas and made more adapted to the age when they are supposed to live.
The historical background is fascinating and vivid, a perfect depiction of what it should have been at the end of the 5th century BC. Christianity is not a central topic as in the classic telling but something in the background, new ideas that will be accepted in the future.
This story went up to top my list of best Arthurian saga retelling as it's one the most powerful and original retelling.
I think this is one of those book you can say "Go, buy it, and be ready for a fascinating reading experience".
Strongly recommended.

Even if the premises are interesting and it's well written I found it very slow and it failed to keep my attention.
Not my cup of tea.

An excellent story of a family, engrossing and full of emotions.
The story builds up the tension slowly but it keeps you hooked and you get involved in the plot.
The characters are well thought and the setting is vivid.

I loved the mix of folklore and fantasy as much as I liked the world building and the well developed plot.
I had some problems in connecting with the characters but I think I missed something as I didn't read the first part of this series.
It's an engrossing and entertaining read.
