It's the first book i read in this series but it won't surely be the last as i loved it.
It's gripping, emotionally charged and entertaining at the same time.
I loved the characters, Roy Grace above all, and I think they are well thought and fleshed out.
There's a mystery but there's also something going on in Roy Grace's life. There are some heartbreaking moments and I liked how the author dealt with them.
Even if it's not the first in a series I had no issue with the plot or the characters.
The author is an excellent storyteller and this story kept me turning pages.
Highly recommended.

3,5 rounded to 4
I don't know if something like grim-dark historical fiction exists but that's the definition for this book. I like dark and gritty story but this one was sometimes a bit too much and it's not a favorite even if I love this author's books.
It's gripping and you cannot stop reading, it's a good historical thriller but it's a bit too violent and graphical in some parts.
Not for everyone and not always my cup of tea, even if I had fun

I liked this last instalment in this series as it was a compelling and entertaining read.
I liked the link to the Ripper investigation and how it made me discover some facts about Walter Sickert and the world of art at the time of the investigation.
The plot is well developed, Abigail and Daniel are two fleshed out characters, and the solid mystery kept me guessing.
Recommended.

I liked this book that brought back to a different time. As I'm Italian born and bred it was like looking at a part of the history of your country through different eyes.
Bella, Cecil and the cast of characters are quite interesting and fleshed out. I liked Bella and appreciated her will to explore and try new things. Cecil was not a favorite but he's fleshed out.
The historical background is well researched and vivid, the impact of the aftermath of WWI and fascism on everyday life are well described.
I would be happy to see a series featuring these characters and Portofino, a lovely place.

I'm on the fence because I don't know if I loved or hated this book, I can say I loved some partes and skipped some others.
Some editing would have helped as I found it a bit repetitive and quite boring at times.
Some other parts were brilliant.
Not my cup of tea.

I was hooked since the first pages and loved Grace, a socially awkward and clever woman who doesn't shy away from solving mysteries.
It's a gritty and dark story, gripping and highly entertaining.
A page turner that I couldn't put down as I wanted to know what was going to happen.
I hope to read other books by this author soon

I'm thinking of reading the Quaker as I loved this dark, twisty and riveting crime thriller.
It started with a bang and it never stopped being an adrenaline fuelled and gripping read.
I loved McCormack and his team, well developed and great characters.
The atmosphere was fascinating as it brought me back to a time when there was no DNA, computer, and cell phones.
The author is a talented storyteller and I hope to read soon other books featuring this character.

It's not easy to review this book because it made me feel so many different emotions that I had to stop reading and start again after a bit.
There's heartbreak, some dark humour, and there're all the possible type of grief.
It's a set of short stories bound by a a pandemic caused by an unknown virus. It may seem dystopia but there's a real possibility that the the melting permafrost will release unknown virus.
The author did an excellent job in writing the different stories and creating some of the most heartbreaking scenario I've ever read.
I loved it and kept on thinking about it: bleak, dark, somehow related to our time. But there's also hope and positive emotions.
Highly recommended.
