It was the first book I read by Tessa Hadley and won't surely be the last as I liked her style of writing.
It's the story of an awakening, of starting again but it's also a story that talks about a woman who choses her lover over her children.
I think this is the most revolutionary part as it's still considered scandalous.
Phillys is not a likeable character: she's entitled and she's ready to forget other people emotion to live her own revolution. Roger seems to be a more likeable character but you discover that nothing is what it seems.
I liked the younger characters but they player a minor part and I would curious to learn about their future.
It's a compelling, well written and interesting book.

This is a very sad story, a story that it's better read when you're not ill or feeling down.
I loved the style of writing and loved Zorrie, a realistic and fleshed out characters.
This is the story of her life, her grief and her dreams.
It's not a long book but it's emotionally charged and brilliant.

You know you read an excellent book when you want to read the rest of the series and think about buying it.
It's easy to compare this story to Death In Paradise but I think they only share the tropical setting and this is a more complex series.
I had a lot of fun in reading this story and the twists made me keep turning pages.
Great characters, setting and storytelling.

This series improves with each book and I had a lot of fun in reading this one. There's a mystery elements, a lot of humour, a romance that made me root for the characters.

Even if I've reading fantasy since the 80s it's the first time I travelled to Osten Ard and this was an excellent way because it's a prequel.
Great world building and character development, a fascinating new world to explore.
I'm happy I read this book, now I have a fascinating series to read.

This is the sort of book that you know you could like and you end up loving it.
Gripping, fast paced, full of surprises and with an intersting cast of characters and a fascinating world building.
Conspiracies, new technologies, action and everything which is necessary to make a book stand out and become one of those book you mark as "VERY VERY GOOD".

The excellent start of a new historical mystery series: dark, twisty and gripping.
The plot is full of twists and turns and the solid mystery kept me guessing.
I liked the characters and think they are fleshed out and well written.
The historical background is vivid and well researched.

It's not an easy or pleasant book. It's a book about blue collar and manual works and it's harsh even if I appreciated the dark humour.
There's plenty of politics and the author is not shy to talk about his ideas.

Susanne O'Leary's stories always made me wish I was in the place she describes and always keep me turning pages.
This one is no exception and i loved the characters, the well told and developed plot, and the lovely setting.
