This is not the kind of book you read if you want a heartwarming and relaxing story because it's gritty, twisty and heartbreaking at time.
It's not one of those book you read before sleeping because it will let you wired after you read till late in the night.
It's atmospheric, claustrophobic and adrenaline fuelled.
That said I loved this first in a new series, it kept me on the edge till the end and reading.
Georgia and Lincoln are the two main POVs. Lincoln the boy that grew into privilege, Georgia, the child adopted by an entire island who run away and came back.
There's a lot going on with these characters, they're both hurt and they have to restart from the moment we read at the beginning of the book.
Georgia is hard nail but there's a strange naivety and sweetness in her. She stands for the children and the women who are being killed.
It's a story of privilege, corruption but also of solidarity and hope.
The author did an excellent job in developing fleshed out characters and the closed world of Bay Angel, the island and a character at the same time.
Highly recommended.

It's been ages since last I read a St. Just mystery and I was delighted to read a new novel in this excellent series.
It's a solid and twisty mystery but it's also a comedy of manners and book full of sharp social remarks.
The descriptions of the life in a small Cornwall town, the tension amongst the villagers and the wealthy weekenders are worth a sociological treaty in what is happening.
This is also the first mystery that deals with the aftermath of Covid, the Great Plague, and how it impacted everyday life.
That said the author delivers a highly entertaining and riveting story, there's plenty of fun and there're some very tense scenes that kept me on the edge.
I highly recommend this series and this novel as they're an excellent example of good mystery.

This is an excellent thriller, gritty and gripping but, ihmo, it's also the best in this series. It struck some chords as I worked with abused children long time ago and I felt for the victims.
There's a lot going on in this book, there's plenty of twists and it's a page turner that keeps turning pages as you discover what's going on and follow the clues.
Maggie's social skills are improving but I already loved her, her no-nonsense approach and the loyalty to her friends.
Excellent storytelling, good character and plot development, a solid mystery.
Highly recommended.

I recently tweeted "It's not recommended to read this book at nighttime as you can suffer from sleep deprivation due to the high level of fun".
I think this summarise my idea on the book: a gripping, highly entertaining, crazy story that kept me turning pages and have a lot of fun.
It's start with a crazy (and very funny) scene and never disappoints as the craziness and the fun are increasing as you read.
If you are looking for a multilayered horror which will make you reflect on life and universe this is the wrong book.
But if you are looking for pure and unadulterated fun, the lovechild of the Goonies and Ghostbuster please go and read it.
There's plenty of 80s nostalgia in this story, pop references and the most extraordinary arms to fight the bad guys.
There's friendship, family but don't expect a heartwarming, Christmas story because there's horror, gore and very bad guys (even some of them are not the type of monster you usually meet)
Have fun and enjoy it, that's what I did.

Midnight Hour: A chilling anthology of crime fiction from 20 acclaimed authors of color
Marla Bradeen, Elizabeth Wilkerson, Jennifer J. Chow, Christopher Chambers, Tina Kashian, Frankie Y. Bailey, Tracy Clark, Raquel V. Reyes, Abby L. Vandiver, V.M. Burns
Anything that includes story by Abbi Vandiver, Gigi Pandian and VM Burn is a must read for me and their story didn't disapping.
I was happy to read a new Java Jones story and thoroughly enjoyed the stories by Ms Vandiver and Burns.
This an anthology of stories bound by a common theme: the midnight hours.
It's a mixed bag but most of the story were quite entertaining and well written.
I discovered some new to me author and enjoyed those by author I already knew.
Recommended.

Martin Walker's Dordogne is a sort of culinary, historical and naturalistic paradise and one of the places I like to visit when I want to relax.
This is an enjoyable and entertaining anthology of short stories, some featuring a mystery and some featuring some small town problem solved by Bruno.
I thoroughly enjoyed them as I'm a fan of the series. The descriptions of the food are mouthwatering and I was left wondering why they do no have any apparent issue with cholesterol (as usual).
I think this not the best book to start the series but it's a highly entertaining and riveting anthology.
I strongly recommend it if you want to relax, and enjoy Bruno's Dordogne.

A good collection of short stories connected by giving gifts, a compelling book that talks about relationships (friends, coworker, families) and it's festive but not in a Hallmark style.
The author develops interesting and fleshed out characters, the story are interesting and the form an interesting mosaic.
