The story was extremely interesting. I enjoyed reading and learning about the different Orisha's, spirits, gods, etc. I did get confused a bit, but I think that was due to me listening to the audio book and not having a physical book to reference when I was confusing the different dieties. I feel that the character of Arrah was missing something. I didn't connect with her as much as I would have liked to, but I got to know her throughout the book. The twists and turns in this story made it so good! I did enjoy this, but I don't know if I'd read the next one.
Such a cute story. I loved the romance and how it developed. I adored the friendships. The story felt real and yet still had that fictional world feeling to it. Hard for me to explain, but I really enjoyed the book! It reminded me of my high school experience and the small town I lived in, and even though I didn’t experience the same situations, it felt so familiar.
I’m not sure how to express how I feel about this story. It was so good. But I felt like I was waiting for something more... I think I’m waiting for something that makes my heart beat with anticipation and dread and maybe that’ll come in the next book?
When a book makes me cry, gasp, and get so pissed off that I slam it onto the table and have to walk away... it gets five stars. I had to leave this book at times, to compose myself. I loved it so much!!! Yukiko and Buruu have a relationship that is so amazing, and the way they are written when they are one is perfect. I’m still in hangover mode at the moment so words are failing me for this review but I truly loved it and look forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy!
Ok... probably going to be spoilers ahead: I read this as a buddy read and I'm glad I did because we had things to discuss during the reading! First off, I love Lemon Fresh. I'm so so so glad that this book centered around her more, and we got to know her more personally. I loved her in the first book too, and I'm more in love with her now. I would love to be that spunky little deviate when I grow up! Her backstory was answered, then not, (because typical Kristoff twist ripped my heart out and stomped on it-poor Lemon) and she finally got a little romance in her life too (LOVE the character of Grimm!) only for that to possibly be ripped (or should I say BLOWN) to bits. Speaking of Grimm, I love the new deviate's! Grimm is the perfect broody, accented bad/good boy for Lemon. Diesel is an awesome foil to Lemon's character with her broodiness and black (but sensitive) heart. Fix is fantastic. Or should I saw "was". He better come back to us Kristoff! You always kill off the GOOD ONES!!!! Now let's talk about the new bad guy in town. That damn Major. I didn't like him from the beginning, but I was hopeful. Of course my instincts shoulda been trusted because he sucked. I'm glad he's ended (he better be ended! No "preacher revival" please!) but I wish it had been a little more hurtful for him. He needed more pain... Now, speaking of "preacher revival"... Damn! That guy can take a beating! I like his sass (can you call it sass or should it be snark? I don't know) and I am actually relieved that he ended up double crossing Zekey at the end, because that was true to his character and I appreciate the staying true! Now let's talk about Staying True to character and EVE... WHAT THE HECK? So, I get that she was someone else her entire existence, until she realized she wasn't herself and just a copy of Ana, but come on! To turn a whole 180 from who she was and end up a killing psycho bitch who literally rips out hearts??? I get her heart was metaphorically ripped out several times, but GEEZ. She reminds me of a Mia Corvere in bot form... so yeah, I didn't like that character arc so much. It was pretty sudden in my opinion. I get that her whole reality was ripped to shreds, but her actual experiences seem to have been ignored by her psyche, and she seemed to rewrite her life as one big fat lie, so she decided to start from scratch as an evil heart ripper outer. I hope she changes a bit to the good in the next book. Who am I missing? Oh Cricket, aka Paladin! LOVE HIM. I am hoping that his self-imposed veritas virus continues to work because I love when he makes him own decisions! And I hope that he gets a new, smaller body in the next book, just not as small as his original form. He's a little too big right now, and he now realizes that wishes sometimes come true! Now that he's had a taste of the big bot life, he realizes it's not all he thought it'd be. I didn't mention Ezekiel much in this review. Well, he didn't do much but run around the Yousay and think a lot. He needs to sort his love life. Next book should rectify that crazy triangle. I think this is officially my longest book review so I'll stop now. I need to get my hands on the third one asap. It's in preorder now, so we'll see how long til it gets to me!
4 and a half stars. (goodreads needs to make half stars available) WELL! That twist at the end was unexpected! Leave it to Mister Kristoff to have a couple twists, a couple deaths and not-deaths, and then twist it AGAIN! The ONLY reason this loses half a star is because Ana's character went from being solid, to wavering, to something else, and wavering again... and then the last page made her seem solid again. Was that intentional? probably but it bugged me. I am super curious as to what will happen next. Where is the Monrova family? Is Ana really a spoiled princess? Will Eve become evil and hateful like Faith and Gabriel? Is there going to be a romance between Eve and Gabriel now? And Lemon Fresh needs more backstory. I need to know more about her. I love her! Time to take a break from science fiction though. Just for a book or two then I'll dive back in for the rest of this series before the final book releases!
Also, I read along with the audio book, narrated by Erin Spencer. Erin is fantastic and I hope she reads the next books in the series!

I read this book for a college class. I really liked the ideas and insight to the different materials and supplies that can be used with early childhood education. I gained new ideas on what to integrate into my classroom. I will be referring back to this text in the future.
I listened to the audio book. It was so great! I'm looking forward to the next book!
