The illustrations are gorgeous. The story is so sweet. The love between the characters is obvious amd adorable. I am looking forward to getting the next installment in the Fall! My only complaint... I want a tea dragon irl!
I don't remember the story in this book from when I was a kid, but I remember that I had to read it sometime in middle school or high school. I don't think I ever actually read it! I loved this book. I took WAY too long to read it this time, but life gets in the way of passion sometimes.
The life of this young girl, Scout, it told in such a way that I felt her emotions, I understood her ways of understanding, and I empathized with her. Harper Lee wrote a wonderful book and I am so glad I decided to read it as an adult.

I have been wanting to read this book for some time, and since the 3rd and final book is soon to be released, I finally jumped in and read it! It was pretty good overall. There were twists that I did not expect and I enjoy not being able to predict what is going to happen. BUT... there were a few too many twists for me to give it a full 5 star review. Also, Scarlett drove me nuts for the first 3/4 of the book! I did not like that character and her naivete, fear, trepidations, and second-guessing everything. I understand that she was a character that needed to go through a major transformation, and that was a key point of the story, but it was irritating. I'm glad she's a stronger character at the end of the book; otherwise, I may not have decided to continue reading the series. I look forward to Legendary, and then Finale because Stephanie Garber creates some pretty cool magical fantasy and the other characters in the book such as Tella and Julian are pretty interesting.
This book wasn't for me. I took far too long to get through this one. It just didn't capture me. I can appreciate the lyrical/descriptive style of Lyra Selene's writing, but it was too much "fluff" for me. The story was wonderful. The imaginative world and characters were magical. I did not enjoy trying to figure out what the different terms used in the book meant. The terms for time were confusing at first. Nocturne, Prime, Spans, etc. The descriptions of everything with many MANY many different words for the same things... how many words are there to describe the color red? Again, this story and writing were very good, imaginative and fantastical... but it was NOT for me. I felt the story was too long, because there were just too many words. And the relationships between characters was confusing. Did they have alternate feelings for one another? Did they dislike or love each other? ugh. Also, I sometimes couldn't keep people straight. The Legacies had 2 names sometimes... the names were's names, but instead descriptions. So there is a lot to keep track of. Maybe I need to take a break from YA Fantasy for a book or two.
I'm torn with this book. It's the first of a series so the end leaves unanswered questions and opportunities for much more story. This definitely felt like it was fitting in a lot of info and not as much story... which makes sense for the beginning of a series. I was confused about the targeted audience. There are parts that are clearly YA such as the relationship between Amani and Maram but then the "love" poem that Amani reads in the book Idris gives her is definitely for adults. Also, there is so much backstory and most of it isn't known... and it's revealed in bits and pieces. I think I may give the next book in the series a chance because it's obvious that the author is talented. I just think she has too much story to tell and not enough book to tell it all in.
Amazing story-gorgeous visuals when you really read and absorb the words.
After reading this a 2nd time: There are still not adequate words to express the MAGIC this book simply IS. I love this book. I need to live in this book.

Very interesting story! It has a different idea than anything I've ever read. I'm not sure where the story is going, but I like that it is not predictable. I'm not sure if it has captured my curiosity enough to have me continue reading additional volumes. I love the illustrations and this Master Edition is a gorgeous book.
I was reluctant to start this book. I think when I hear hype about something, and then hear that there is going to be a movie, I automatically think "it cant possibly live up to all the hype". I was wrong in this case. This book made me feel so much. I could not relate to Starr and her life, and yet I felt a lot of emotions for and with her. I cried! More than once! I literally laughed out loud! This was eye opening in a realistic way. I highly recommend this book... now, will the movie do it justice?
So, so good! This is a mystery that grabs you immediately and doesn't let go! There were twists and turns amd nothing too predictable! I hate predictable. This book is definitely going to give me a "book hangover" but it was worth it!
Kids will love it. It is the perfect read-aloud bedtime book for those older kids who are still young enough to let you read to them. The illustrations are fantastic as well and such a great compliment to all the descriptive, fun words with which the story is told. Read this to your kids, your grandkids, or even your significant other!
