Really interesting historical fiction about enslaved peoples in the underground railroad but with extremely fantastical elements.

I can't tell if this is a young adult/kids book or an adult fiction honestly. The main character is a boring middle-aged man with an office job which makes me think the demographic is not kids/ya but it reads like a Series of Unfortunate Events mixed with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. A cute story about tolerance and being kind and following your gut to leave the ordinary behind.

The writing was pretty juvenile and there are many plot holes and the plot is blaringly obvious but it was entertaining and exciting with well developed characters and world. The Magic was cool and the story had an interesting cultural aspect to it often using Spanish words instead of English which really added to the ambiance of the story and put you into the world.

Hilarious, cast of characters. Brilliant and sarcastic writing. Cute but classic love story of a rich man "fixed" by a "poor "girl.
