4.25/5

What I liked
-combining philosophy and science theories
-the “ghost” aspect is very fascinating that made me think about what haunts us (being deliberately vague because there are so many different ways to interpret the story!)
-exploration of love in its different forms
-the “religious” aspect. As someone who’s not religious, I was worried I wouldn’t get the story fully, but it’s discussed in a way that isn’t limited to Christianity, but more generally like our beliefs or what defined us. Quite beautiful and profound

What didn’t work for me
-the writing style gives it a 19th century vibe when the three timelines are 1997, 2008, and 2017. This was very disorienting for me and I kept wondering why the characters aren’t using technology to solve their problems (like just go on dating apps and find new partners or friends???? You don’t have to obsess over the same person

This might be a five star in the end but I have to let it marinate a bit. A very brilliant read that demands a lot from the readers. Not your typical fast-paced and obvious suspense/horror, but a very subtle one where I was waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time while doubting myself. I had no idea where the novel was going but it was worth the patience (and emotional torture of not knowing what’ll happen

“At first, we all got kind of sucked in. But when you pull away, it starts to seem like madness."

What I liked
-the dry humor
-interesting anthropological facts and philosophical musings
-political commentary - especially on left vs right, horseshoe theory, different ways of progressiveness. This might be the most political book on the longlist and I appreciate how relevant these concepts are. Even though they made me a bit pessimistic about humanity’s future
