I didn't quite know what I was getting into with this book. I knew it was about a homeless man finding a cat and their journeys, but had no idea how heartbreaking and wonderful it would be. This book was a delight to read and I'm having to stop myself from looking up both Michael and Ron on Facebook to see how all the kitties are doing!
Something I definitely struggle with, along with other issues, is burnout. And not just burnout from my job, but even from hobbies at times. It's frustrating and annoying, but it's nice (in a weird way) to know I'm not alone in this strange form of burnout.
I'm looking forward, now, to looking up and reading the article that sparked this and the book that apparently also exists!

Before reading:
This was published about two months before the 2016 presidential election. I'm expecting that I'll have also heard (far too many times) all the "reasons" to elect Trump. Hell, I'm in Louisiana - I'm still hearing that he actually won the 2020 election and it was just fraud that put Biden in office.

I've been reading one story every other day or so. They are all amazing in different ways.
"The Ones Who Stay and Fight"
I would say that a utopian city such as this one might be worth the cost that is being paid. It's worth a shot at least. Right?
"The City Born Great"
The birthing of a city. Sort of. It was a really fascinating and creative look at cities. I think I've read it before, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment.
"Red Dirt Witch"
I was expecting another futuristic story, but instead we went back in time and visited a couple black witches who could see glimpses of the future.
"L’Alchimista"
Chef to witch seems like an easy career move.
"The Effluent Engine"
Oooh! This one takes place in New Orleans and even mentioned Baton Rouge in passing. I enjoyed the spy intrigue feeling and the touch of romance.
"Cloud Dragon Skies"
Boy meets girl. Boy destroys the earth. Maybe. Boy and girl live happily ever after in space.
"The Trojan Girl"
What happens to your code when it's gone into the internet? Does it evolve on it's own? Maybe.
"Valedictorian"
To be yourself or not to be. It really isn't a question. Not if Zinhle follows her own rules.
"The Storyteller’s Replacement"
This was a story inside a story. I don't particularly understand the purpose of the outer story, but I found the inner story quite fascinating.
"The Brides of Heaven"
This one went heavy on religion, but in a different planet.
"The Evaluators"
Oh wow. This one was really cool!
"Walking Awake"
The lengths humans will go to just because they can and just because they want to hurt others...
"The Elevator Dancer"
Religious oppression and Big Brother make an appearance.
"Cuisine des Mémoires"
Any meal, from any time, from any where - what would you choose?
"Stone Hunger"
This one seems to tackle the question of "what makes a monster a monster?"
"On the Banks of the River Lex"
I love stories about Death as a character. This one is definitely a favorite.
"The Narcomancer"
Sleep magic, bandits, and a Goddess of dreams.
"Henosis"
This story has chapters that are out of order and I'm intrigued.
"Too Many Yesterdays, Not Enough Tomorrows"
Stuck in an endless loop. Alone. With only an internet connection.
"The You Train"
This is the equivalent of listening to one side of a phone conversation. I always thought that would be annoying, but really it was fun imagining the responses!
"Non-Zero Probabilities"
Luck run amuck!
"Sinners, Saints, Dragons, and Haints, in the City Beneath the Still Waters"
Oh fuck. This one. It's too close.

Another "adventure" that is filled with obnoxious characters. Can't anyone in these books be likeable for more than two pages!?
More of the same, but at least this time a standard entourage of Oz characters held off until the end to show up.
I just... I'm kind of just running out the clock on the original books in the series now. They're not fun or magical or whimsical or even entertaining anymore. I'm strictly finishing them to know that I've finished them.
Kids will probably still be entertained, but it's just not good. It's like Baum ran out of ideas and started trying to patch old plot holes or something with this one.
