Full review on: FLIPPING THRU THE PAGES
This was my first attempt in reading the genre- Poetry, and to my expectations, it did surprise me. Though it was a quick read and I finished it within an hour, it was just BEAUTIFUL.
I had read other reviews about this book and I can understand why some people have a different opinion on this. Probably they have read too mean poetry and thus expected it to be something different. But for me, as a reader of poetry for the first time (obviously after school 😛 ), it was wonderful.
This was my first modern poetry so it was little different than I expected the poetry to be. Different in terms of writing, as compared to what we used to read in our childhood. I thought that it would be like having rhyming words at the end of each sentence. A particular subject will be chosen and the poet will try to showcase his/her feelings through rhyming words. But to my surprise, I think the poetry nowadays has changed a lot. Rather than focusing on the rhyming words, they just try to put their thoughts in the form of few short sentences. But whatever the way is, it should capture the attention of readers in the best way possible, and that’s exactly Milk and Honey did.
The book is divided into four parts: “the hurting“, “the loving“, “the breaking” and “the healing". The author tried to connect with the readers during each stage by showcasing the true feelings that one feels during the heartbreaks and the healing process. Out of all the four sections, the second one- “the loving” was my least favorite(hence one star less), as some of those lines haven’t connected so well to me, as the other ones.
This collection also includes illustrations done by Rupi herself. The doodles are so wonderful and shareable. The writing is simple. It was not hard to understand what does the author wanted to express. You can easily connect to her. There are many lines which seem exactly as your feelings and thus can easily be your favorite, as you can relate easily with them.
The chapters are equally divided into two painful phases and two uplifting phases. This is a different kind of theme which I really liked. In my opinion, it depicts the two phases of life: happy and sad. The core thought of the author behind these verses, is that mishappenings can occur to anyone and we have no control over it. They simply can’t be predicted but we can surely fight them and can learn to live well. However, every bad day has an end and we can see the blessings being converted.
Rupi Kaur brought all my feelings forward. She has included topics such as love, loss, trauma, femininity, heartbreak, healing. These topics are very strong to capture. She has perfectly addressed what it feels like to be broken, to be loved, and to be healed by all on your own.
My favoruite poem:
Isn’t it just beautiful?
I would totally recommend this book to someone, who want to read some different kind of poetry or just wanted to start this genre. These poems will make your heart break and at the same time will make you happy. The poems are filled with positivity and self-love. Rupi Kaur really touched me deeply and I loved her refreshing style and hoping to readmore from her in future her new upcoming book soon.

but you had your eyes shut"

"accept yourself
as you were designed
your body
is a museum
of natural disasters
can you grasp how
stunning that is"

My favoruite poem:
"I struggle so deeply to understand
how someone can
pour their entire soul, blood and energy
into someone without wanting anything in return
– I will have to wait till I’m a mother"

October 7th, 2020: I have been meaning to update my review for this book for so long but finally I got time today. When I first read this book in 2017, I enjoyed it and you can read my review below (in spoiler section). But since then, I am more informed, more woke and now when I look back at this book, I see that it is super problematic. So I am removing my star rating and also hiding my review in spoilers.
Yeah I know I can remove the review all together but I don't want to do that (it's a lesson for my future self).
I can't tell what exactly I felt after finishing reading this. I finished it late night, two days back and wanted to think what I need to write in the review. The basic reason I pick this up because of the obvious recent hype and also I wanted to see the TV series, but only after reading it.
This story is about a girl named Hannah who committed suicide and then leaves 13 tapes stating 13 different reasons (persons) for this drastic step of hers. Those tapes were meant to go from one person to the another in the tape. The story is told from Clay Jensen's POV when he receives the tape.
I won't say I was intrigued by the story from the page one. No I wasn't. A few reasons in the starting seems rather simpler ones and I can't imagine anyone taking their lives over these. They were the reasons that almost everyone faces during one time or other. But when i was about half way through and started realising the effect of each reason simultaneously. When separately seen, those reasons just sounded stupid to make such a decision, when you did combined them, then you can feel the emotions of the person who was going through them.
Friendships are hard and they are the things which ruins or makes a person. Clearly, for Hannah they ruined her. She was tired of al the rumours about her and everyone believing them. She just wanted someone to trust her, but she couldn't find any.
All the reasons here leads you to think how everything you say can make a big impact on anyone else's life. Though it may seem smaller to you, but for the person you are saying it can mean a totally different thing and thus can make them to do what you can't expect. So start watching out what you say and do to others. Start taking responsibility.
“When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything. . . affects everything.”
I have been through stress, I have faced many such situations, so I can feel her emotions too. But yes see was weak to handle all this. I think there is a strong message too in this book which everyone need to understand: You need to be stronger, no matter what. And suicide is not a solution. You have a whole bunch of you family and friends who actually cares for you, no matter you know this or not, and they will be devastated on your one such decision. It not only just ruins you but also the lives of others around you.
This was definitely a fast-paced book but its a real sensitive matter. I would surely recommend this book, but only when you are not in such a bad mood or in depression.
