Thirteen Reasons Why
by Jay Asher
October 7th, 2020: I have been meaning to update my review for this book for so long but finally I got time today. When I first read this book in 2017, I enjoyed it and you can read my review below (in spoiler section). But since then, I am more informed, more woke and now when I look back at this book, I see that it is super problematic. So I am removing my star rating and also hiding my review in spoilers.
Yeah I know I can remove the review all together but I don't want to do that (it's a lesson for my future self).
I can't tell what exactly I felt after finishing reading this. I finished it late night, two days back and wanted to think what I need to write in the review. The basic reason I pick this up because of the obvious recent hype and also I wanted to see the TV series, but only after reading it.
This story is about a girl named Hannah who committed suicide and then leaves 13 tapes stating 13 different reasons (persons) for this drastic step of hers. Those tapes were meant to go from one person to the another in the tape. The story is told from Clay Jensen's POV when he receives the tape.
I won't say I was intrigued by the story from the page one. No I wasn't. A few reasons in the starting seems rather simpler ones and I can't imagine anyone taking their lives over these. They were the reasons that almost everyone faces during one time or other. But when i was about half way through and started realising the effect of each reason simultaneously. When separately seen, those reasons just sounded stupid to make such a decision, when you did combined them, then you can feel the emotions of the person who was going through them.
Friendships are hard and they are the things which ruins or makes a person. Clearly, for Hannah they ruined her. She was tired of al the rumours about her and everyone believing them. She just wanted someone to trust her, but she couldn't find any.
All the reasons here leads you to think how everything you say can make a big impact on anyone else's life. Though it may seem smaller to you, but for the person you are saying it can mean a totally different thing and thus can make them to do what you can't expect. So start watching out what you say and do to others. Start taking responsibility.
“When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything. . . affects everything.”
I have been through stress, I have faced many such situations, so I can feel her emotions too. But yes see was weak to handle all this. I think there is a strong message too in this book which everyone need to understand: You need to be stronger, no matter what. And suicide is not a solution. You have a whole bunch of you family and friends who actually cares for you, no matter you know this or not, and they will be devastated on your one such decision. It not only just ruins you but also the lives of others around you.
This was definitely a fast-paced book but its a real sensitive matter. I would surely recommend this book, but only when you are not in such a bad mood or in depression.
