This was pretty frickn' cool tbh. I've never read a retelling like this, and I'm definitely intrigued to see where the story goes after that intriguing cliffhanger.
That being said, while this is an interesting retelling of Alice, the book itself is pretty slow and not much happens. You could probably get away with reading the last 100 pages and then moving onto book 2. I do still recommend it for diehard Alice fans looking for a new twist on the story.
Great for fans of Percy Jackson & Alice in Wonderland (particularly the new movies with Depp & co.)

Honestly, I'm tired and I'm not really sure what to say about this. I finished this a couple of hours ago and while I did really enjoy I Was Born For This for the most part, I'm not left with this overarching love for everything Alice Oseman, which I'm not gonna lie, I was kind of expecting. I really enjoyed the first 200ish (roughly half) pages of this but, the rest was a bit of a miss for me. I think, honestly, that band settings and stories just don't do it for me. After seeing so many of these stories lately like A Star is Born and then Daisy Jones & The Six, I think music just isn't a genre I really care about exploring more than within my headphones.
TW: Panic attacks, anxiety, depression, talk of suicide/ not wanting to be alive, suicide, talk or forced coming out, alcohol abuse, parental abandonment, assault#

Thank God, it's over. I enjoyed the writing but everything about this was awful. Seriously, having to read about Jane Eyre and Rochester having a discussion was the blandest and stupid thing I've read in a long time. It was like two brick walls trying to converse with each other - ridiculous.

Wow, I literally only just finished this so I'm a bit unsure of what I want to say so I might write a review up later today or tomorrow. All I'll say in case I don't is that I had a lot of thoughts while reading this and most of them were negative, but some of them were also positive. I think this book is going to get a lot of bad press so I want everyone to remember that this was the author's debut novel and that the reading experience is different for everyone.
I think my main gripe with this book was that it made me uncomfortable. I don't know how else to explain it, other than, this book involves cheating in one way or another and the main character, Shane also has a quite an intense/full on personality that I know irl would annoy me. And there were a bunch of other little things - basically when you put everything together and you get to the point, Shane (MC) is too similar to Christine (author) and so that made me uncomfortable because it made me feel like I was judging her and that left a bad taste in my mouth.
I had a bit of a hard time reading this one, especially in the middle but overall, this isn't a terrible book. I won't ever read it again and I won't praise it like it's the best thing in the word, but there are definitely worse books out there, so if this sounds like something you'd like, why not give it a try? I especially loved all the travelling the characters did, so for me, that was one of the best things that this book did for me.
Also, I swear I'm almost done but, I wanted to add this in here. I don't know what age group this fits into. I think it's being marketed as YA but has some NA themes and the characters definitely fit into the NA age category. There's some F bombs, mentions of sex and fades to black and some other heavier themes you don't usually see in YA. So, I guess you'll have to make up your own mind on that front, I just wanted to mention it.

I really enjoyed Terry Pratchett's writing and learning about the Discworld but this book was confusing af. I'll definitely continue in the series and re-read this one at some point, though.

I've never read anything by Elle Kennedy before but if this is what the rest of her books are like, I'll definitely have to pick up more of her books because this was addicting! It had a pretty underwhelming ending but I really enjoyed the rest of the book!
PS. if you came here for the fake dating trope there's not really more than a chapter or two if it.

Damn, these books are easy to read and so so addicting! I did really enjoy The Deal, though not as much as The Risk which I read the other day. I really liked Hannah as a character and I warmed up to Garrett (who names their love interest Garrett???) around the 40-50% mark. I really loved his character development and reading this made me excited to pick up more of Elle Kennedy's books, though I have no idea what to read next.
