Very cute and such a quick read! There were a few too many stops and starts in this relationship (especially by the end) but, I really appreciated this opposites attract romance with two vulnerable men growing together. I’ll definitely be picking up the sequel!

An interesting and tragic portrayal of time travel with a romance that tried very hard not to look like grooming but still definitely was.
TW: some really and truly horrible discourse about having children with down syndrome & awful discourse about adopted children being different to blood children.

Not mind-blowing but I liked the characters and the family dynamic enough that I'll definitely read book 2 whenever it comes out. I also think this would make a really fun movie tbh.

A good alternative to the Harry Potter series but, honestly I just don't understand why so many people hyped it up when it first came out. It was pretty boring and slow tbh. I prefer the Keeper of The Lost Cities series which has some similar characteristics but a far more interesting plot and I think, more engaging characters.

Disturbing and horrific in an authentic but "hard to look" at kind of way. As always, this was fantastic and angsty and dark and had a great secondary theme of family, but oh God The Joker was hard to look at. I'll definitely read the next volume but I hope this Joker plot is over soon because I prefer to learn about the other villains!

“Sifting through an urn of cremated remains you cannot tell if a person had successes, failures, grandchildren, felonies. “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Very difficult to read and not something I'd recommend reading while you eat. However, this is also an incredibly important book. It can be incredibly graphic and Doughty doesn't shy away from giving you all the gruesome details but, I think that's a good and very necessary thing, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes doesn't shy away from death, in fact, it explains it to you in great detail. You learn the history of funeral and death practices and reactions within different cultures and also shows how our reactions (particularly in the Western World) have changed so dramatically, even just in the last couple of hundred years.
I also thought it was particularly interesting to learn about biases and stereotypes within the funeral and death "business". Like, for example how fatphobic, in general, the business is. Something you don't have to think about until it's right in front of you forcing you to think about it so I appreciate Doughty discussing it.
So yeah, all in all, this isn't a perfect book and I did have my little issues with it but, I think everyone should at least give it a read (or look at some more in-depth reviews than mine). Smoke Gets In Your Eyes forces us to confront our unhealthy and almost silent relationship with death (most notably in the Western World) and recognise that ignoring death isn't a helpful or healthy approach or response.

I definitely didn't love this one as much as I did Callum and Ada's story, but I just think that's because I can't get past how stockholm-y the entire Beauty and The Beast story is. That being said, of all the B&THB retellings I've ever read, this would have to be the best one I've come across. I doubt I'll ever re-read this particular story but, I did still enjoy it and I loved seeing Nessa slowly come into her own as a person!

I genuinely had no idea what I was going to think of this because I really know nothing about mafia romances but I actually really loved this. It was a proper enemies to lovers, I only wish that we'd gotten a bit more time for Ada and Callum to bone before they got to the lovers bit of their relationship but I'm definitely a Sophie Lark fan now!

I can sort of see The Legacy having a point if this collection is a segway into a second series with these characters and their own families, but if that isn't the case, this really just feels like Elle Kennedy was bored and needed some quick cash. The drama in each story was silly and easily resolved and I just didn't appreciate it, unfortunately.
