Wow, that was absolutely incredible. War is not like the movies.
It's nice that Urara is challenging herself and trying something that she was intimidated by!
A sweet end to the sweetest story ever. I am glad I read this series. The artwork is lovely, you can tell a lot of heart was put into it. And the story is wholesome from start to finish <3
Ehh, I was a bit disappointed given how high the ratings are. The first volume really stretches out the main plot point, and it feels repetitive bc the characters keep thinking the same things over and over. It has a cute premise though, so I will give vol 2 a try.
I don't like how the story is really dragged out between volumes. Like in this volume, Mao meets Hiro's brother and her blog fan Radical-san, but as the reader we don't learn anything new about those characters through the entire volume.
The characters are all simplistic and immature, so that just adds to how slow the narrative feels. For example, how many times will Hiro say "Magyo" and Mao correct him? That whole useless interaction takes up considerable page space, and there are a lot of dialogues like that... Mao calling someone a jerk when they are nice to her, etc. So, I think I am going to DNF the rest of the series.

DNF @ 25%
The language and setting reminded me of The Book Thief but the characters are half as interesting and the book *feels* twice as long

2022: Still so bittersweet and moving. The characters are incredible and lifelike. I love them.
2014: Love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love! Every part of it is so, so good. Plot, characters, writing, narration, themes, development...all are perfect. I laughed, cried, dreamed, and wondered. I will definitely, like Liesel Meminger did with her books, read this over and over again.
PS I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator did a stellar job.

The protagonist, Nick, wants to move from having superficial, scripted conversations with people to having real and meaningful connections. And the art when he is able to do that.... incredible.
