I could not get over how short season 8 of Queer Eye was, so I decided now was the time to finally listen to Jonathan Van Ness's memoir. I had been putting it off because his public persona is so high energy that I thought the six hours of audio would be a lot to take in. I listened to it in 3 stretches, and it was a lot, but he talks about so many serious and deep topics in his life that it isn't bubbly positive chatter the whole time.

Like, no secrets left untold, years of self destructive behaviors laid out in the open. I for sure wouldn't have had the guts to reveal all of that about my personal life. By being so honest and intimate, I think JVN boldly sweeps shame out from under the rug, helps destigmatize people with addictions, and brings dignity to people who are on abusive paths. Honestly, he is a gem!

Finally read this feminist classic. I can imagine how fresh, bold, and revolutionary this book must have sounded 50 years ago. Today the narration comes across as naive and caricatural. Molly, the MC/narrator, has the "batman superpower" of making everyone else in the room suddenly suffer from an intelligence drop: she always knows how to expose other people's vulnerabilites, she always gets away with her revenge pranks, she is always morally superior by refusing to use labels and boxes, always the best in class without even having to study. So smart, witty, funny, popular, sexy, athletic, etc, the girl everyone wants to be and be with. A childish fantasy.

I think there were a couple concepts that Brown did a great job of writing into the story: self-hatred stemming from sexual repression and how this manifests in sabotaging relationships (romantic or not), and Molly's evolution from a bright-eyed girl into a cynical woman.

It is pretty impressive to see how far we have come in just a few generations. Our vocabulary and ability to discuss feminism as a society has evolved. Reading through other reviews, I can see that today's readers can quickly recognize the problematic aspects of the book and expand on various aspects of feminism that the book never broaches. Onward ho.

That was silly

Silly nonsense. I did want to eat all that good food tho.

First read: Feb 2015
Second read: March 2018
Third read: October 2019 - gosshhh I love this book. Maybe it's my favorite?
Fourth: Jan 2022 - it's definitely my favorite.
Fifth: Feb 2024 - My favorite scenes are Old Jiko vs the supermarket girls, the day Nao quits school, and when Nao's dad says "We must live!"

I was overall disappointed and kept asking myself if I should just quit reading (the book, not in general). I did not like the art style or lettering, the stream of consciousness style story telling wasn’t for me, the image quality in the ebook I read was so low that there were many points where the text was literally unreadable, and there were 100% too many frames of characters laughing at the author’s jokes (I thought The Office successfully killed laugh tracks like 2 decades ago). It was shallow compared to my expectations for what it could have been.

Simple but cute. Reminds me of Uyen Ninh and German Boyfriend.

I suppose I have probably finished this by now! The reason I got this particular version is because of the two reflection questions after each of the daily readings (alternating OT and NT + poetry). There are two different editions of The Message in a Year, and both have reflection questions, but the more popular version has more superficial questions while this edition has more thoughtful and deeper questions. Since I bought this because of the questions, I wish they were in a little ebook on their own, so it would be easier to use with any version of the bible you are reading.

I love Britney. I don't care about her IQ, mental health issues, or morals. She inspires me by how open hearted and playful she is. I am sad her family is so terrible and I am glad she is free to live how she wants now.
