what.

Thank you to the fantastic author for my arc. I took so much pleasure in reading this one simply because I've been SO excited to see their journey. Now I'm here to say her work has definitely paid off with this one. Considering it's supposed to be even better on its final release. With that said, let's get into it.

We have a Hades/Persephone retelling which has now been done quite a bit. BUT I think this story is a little more original in its beginning and background history. The flow of her story was well-paced for my tastes, The build-up of our main character was enjoyable to witness. I loved finding out more of her backstory as it continued and her development about halfway through was another plus for me. She really helped me connect and feel for the characters throughout and had me toss back paragraphs left and right the moment she threw a lil twist in there because I most definitely did NOT want to put it down then. Now there was one character I wasn't as sold on but just because he wasn't up to my personal standards for some of it. I felt like at certain times he didn't fit right into the book but the ending took care of that for me lol. I'm only sad that now I not only have to wait for a second book but the first hasn't actually even come out yet!! So if she can leave me feeling that way in the end my very minor flaws with it don't matter as much to me.

I think with the final release it'll be fine-tuned and smoothed out for sure. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea and that's okay. But for me, I loved it.

His writing always seems to leave the decisions up to you. Should you be scared? Should this make you feel a certain way? It's really up to you. The horror you expect is more cut and dry skepticism and uncensored reality. You could blink and easily miss the high point of each short story. Strangely enough all these things can equally draw you in.

The simplicity is probably what Tremblay does best with his horror. It's not unnecessarily deep or attempting to be something it's not. I think this is definitely something to read if you're trying this genre out and don't know quite what you like yet. Like with all short story collections, some just don't hit but others will land beautifully.

This definitely took a unique approach to short story collections. We've got our horror and gore, even the bloodier aspects but what I was surprised by was his ability to intertwine these stories so well that I didn't expect it. The ending and the way it's tied off beautifully made me almost sad it was over. It gave me very slight Black Mirror vibes and if you like strange monsters you'd definitely love this one too.

I would enjoy seeing this one taken further just because of the vibes it gave me. I think that's definitely what this one boils down to. The absolute insanity of it was so so interesting and I'm always a sucker for apocalyptic stories. This was very fresh and original with it's take on infected and how we as humans are deemed worthy. The title completely ties in and I loved it.

I’ve been a fan of Kelley Armstrongs work for years. My favorite trilogy as a kid was The Darkest Powers. I use to reread it every few years with my sister. So I was overjoyed to receive this arc.

I would say 3.5 stars on this only because at times it was easy to guess the direction it was heading and the overall plot line. But it was still enjoyable and had me entertained the entire time. Almost like I was already rereading the book at some points. I think this would be a fantastic read for someone who hasn’t read much of this genre and wants to start and see how it goes! It’s a simple read with a satisfying pay out at the end.

This collection completely showed the heart of our author and just what type of emotions they sat down to pour out. The main thing to take away from poetry is always; it’s subjective. It really depends on the person reading and what time of their life they’re reading at. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and everything I felt while reading it.

The enthralling pages of this book held me the entire way through. The illustrations added hearth and ease to an already intensely long subject. Our author described everything beautifully and with the simplicity of a seasoned philosopher. It held my interest but also my mind. It’s a fantastic way to get someone more involved and knowledgeable about a subject. I can’t wait to reread and find more written by him! If you’d like to actually learn something while just purely enjoying yourself, this is the one.

Intense, horrific, mind boggling. You could use a hundred other words to describe the feelings of this book. It was an interesting and very detailed book that our author very clearly knew a ton about. The details you read are not for the faint of heart. I think it was super informative and I appreciated the look you’re given into this world of chaos and violence. Definitely give this one a read if you’re a fan of true crime.
