Thank you to NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Would you like a book to tell you exactly what it would feel like for a woman in the institutional world of dark academia?

The true under belly of just how unfortunate she’d be treated and viewed. Of the world we’re perceived in and how the world perceives us in return. A Study in Drowning does just this. The sharp parchment and rolled scrolls of this is no where near as pertinent as the house on a cliff with a girl just trying to survive vibes. Showing us bravery is more than picking up your armor and marching to battle.

Our main character Effy is a uniquely serene and soft girl who is just trying to get by as best she can. That there’s a certain beauty to that way of survival. Sometimes it’s better to remain. Remain still. Remain running. Or remain hidden. I think the author did a spectacular job of giving us a book that shows such beauty in an antiqued world. Our flawed mc comes out endearing through the twists and turns you see throughout this book!

This was interestingly described and detailed. The world sounds fascinatingly whimsical with a touch of darker undertones that I enjoyed even if it’s suitable for children with things being a little more black and white. It’s a slow read I’ll admit with not much pull until close to the end, for me. I didn’t come back craving more every time I put it down but I didn’t necessarily expect myself to. This is definitely a book that younger me would have found awe-inspiring so I can safely say it was still a great read!

Thank you to the author for my advanced readers copy and letting me enjoy this amazing book!

It’s taken me a bit but only because I wanted to word this review as eloquently as possible, considering how much I loved this book. The author took their time describing a world and it’s characters in such an intricate way. Fantasy can get over saturated but this was freshly done with new and original plot points.

I always try to keep my reviews spoiler free (for the most part) but you’ll LOVE our main characters and the vibes. They’re easy to love and root for the entire time. Even after finding out… certain things about Elyse, you still love to see her succeed throughout the book. PLUS THE CLIFF HANGER. Thankfully we’re getting a second book and we can return to the world and characters and finally get some more answers!

Give this book a try!! It’ll easily become your new favorite.

A sweet release of poetry for the soul. It spurs you on through your emotions and the self discovery we all eventually abide by. It was a refreshing look at how poems can inflict so much emotion on us. Good or bad. It’s all there. I think this collection is a enjoyable read for most and would be a fantastic start to your poetry journey.

This was very interesting and heartwarming to read. The illustrations were SO FUN to look at and really brought the story to life for me. It felt like a lesson disguised in a clever way about life and acceptance and loving yourself. I think they did a fantastic job.
