Who wouldn’t love a modern retelling of Carmilla?! Sapphic romance and dark academia really do go hand in hand. This book holds the stage with vampire society, mystery, gore-ish murder, and the sweet gothic troubles one would face in a secluded boarding school. Laura enters as this cutesy girl from a little life that encounters the obscurities this place holds. Carmilla is quite the opposite with her divinely troubled ways. Rivals to lovers continues to hold absolute sway over me time and time again. READ IT!!!
I saw someone say this was Lana Del Rey coded and I COULDN’T AGREE MORE.

Folklore? Check. Sapphic romance? Check. Murder mystery? Check. Political intrigue? Check. I could go on and on. This was such a interesting world built around these beautiful almost poetic fantasy features. I really enjoyed Lorelei, the main character, and her character depth. She felt so real and flawed but perfect at the same time. The romance in this was GORGEOUSLY written, I could picture this to poetry. Once again I’m here for academic rivals. You’ll see me every time too. I can say that I absolutely need a sequel right now and I will beg for the end of my days. The back drop for this was just immaculate.

Really loved the intricase of these poems and their ability to have you looking at a regular normal world and it’s people. They were emotionally beautiful.

I was surprised with how interesting this story ended up being. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when walking into it. But it was unique and full of really fun magical realism. Which is one of my favs. I didn’t mind the different POVs because I feel it added to the story instead of taking away. The friendship was sweet to see between the twins and the people they had around them. The cliffhanger though destroyed me and I’m going to just pretend I didn’t read it lol. All in all you should definitely give this one a try!

This is a book with so much emotional turmoil and heart wrenching depth. It cuts on every surface and reminds you of the good you can still find when you look. Especially after something you have no control over. Fantastic read with a very important message at its core.
