In a bit of a reading slump I guess.

This book is either super pretentious or way too smart for me, I'm not sure which. Maybe both?

Either way I'm not in the mood for it.

This story feels incredibly empty. The three main characters have exactly one personality trait each, with one of them being a manic pixie dream girl; the world and ghosts are poorly imagined

(what if ghosts were just unhungry zombies);

and I have never read so many ineffectual metaphors. 

This book is deeply mediocre but thinks it's just deep 

I just wasn't enjoying this book enough to keep going. I wasn't attached to or intrigued by any of the characters, the plot was (so far) extremely predictable, and LaValle is constantly telling rather than showing. It also felt like there was a significant discord between his writing style and the book he was trying to write

Mostly I was just too bored. There were the dangling carrots of Cass' past, what's going to happen with the movie, with B.B., with Dylan and Daniel, etc., But I just wasn't invested enough to want to find out 

Having also read and not enjoyed Anxious People, I can admit that Fredrick Bachman's writing style and characters are not for me. I get the merits of this book's story and message, but I was completely annoyed by the two characters I was supposed to find endearing.
