This is a book marketed to be about the black experience when it’s written by a white woman. It’s like a man writing about women’s suffrage, or a prostitute writing about what it’s like to be a priest. White savior literature at its finest. Maybe we as a society should uplift black voices writing about their own history and experiences instead of lining the pockets of another white person who thinks she should be doing it for them. Because there are plenty of black authors who have written more meaningful stories than this and they have written them well. Where’s their big marketing and movie deals?
