This was the most accurate coming of age story for a tween/teen I have ever read. Believe it or not I picked it up for the ghost story but I’m so glad I did. Where I can’t exactly say I love been in Bug’s shoes, I can say I remember that feeling. Middle school is a wild time and can be scary, but then you layer everything else Bug is dealing with and just wow. This is one of those books I think everyone should read. We will either know kids like Bug, have kids like Bug, or once we’re kids like Bug.

I only read this book because of the StoryGraph Genre Challenge prompt "read a middle grade book with queer representation." I was dreading this one the most, because I assumed a middle grade book would be "beneath" me and I would get bored reading it. I only picked it because a quick Google search said it fit the criteria, and the audiobook was available from my library on Libby. The audiobook narration is fine, not overly performative or anything, and felt "invisible" in that it didn't get in the way of the story which I really liked. It really felt like the character was narrating, that it was truly Bug's inner monologue, not too flashy or self-indulgent.

The book itself is beautifully written. While I was a bit bored in the first half (it felt a bit cliché at first), I absolutely loved the second half of the book. Going in, I had no idea what this book was about, and I think that's the best way to approach this story. It's a sad story with a happy ending and a lot of emotional moments (it literally made me cry), and it's short too. While I'm definitely not the target audience, I was pleasantly surprised, and strongly recommend reading it if you're interested! I think if you don't know what the book is about, it will have a greater emotional impact on you, so I suggest not reading anything about it and just dive in. Go along with Bug on this journey of grief and self-discovery!

Too Bright to See was a beautiful coming of age/coming out story. As well as a ghost story. It ready easily and a lot of youth will see themselves in this book, which is so important.

This was so good!! I got very emotional in the last quarter of it!

Forgoing a formal review because honestly it made me go through so many different emotions, some of which were entirely unrelated to the contents, that I'm too biased. I'm glad this book exists. I'm so glad we finally get to see a trans story that starts with someone who doesn't see themself as their preferred gender, or even necessarily know that's something they can want.

Four stars because I felt like the ending was a little rushed; in general this book just could have been a little longer. Also because I reserve five stars for books that really blow my mind, I'm picky. But yeah, read this and get it for your middle reader kids, trans or not; it's a good ghost story and a beautiful coming-of-age.
