Hair-raising, heartbreaking, triumphant. I was already familiar with Kyle Lukoff’s genius due to his picture book, When Aidan Became A Brother, which is a book I revisit monthly. As soon as I knew he’d penned a middle grade novel, I knew I’d need this book.
I waited.
And waited.
And waited some more.
Now that I’ve read it, amidst my own transition

I wish all coming out stories were full of this much love and understanding from the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally.

This is such an excellent book I wish had always been around for the people who needed something like this when I was a kid. One part ghost story, one part grieving (which hit close right now), and one part learning how to be who you are. <3
A hybrid between horror and self-reveal, but the horror is of the gentle sort, the primary ghost being a beloved relative, and the boy is made manifest through a series of embarrassing and/or sweet but ever gentle vignettes. Too many awards to list here. I loved this book.

Set in Vermont and narrated by eleven year old Bug, after the death of Uncle Roderick, Bug is haunted by ghost.
Lukoff does a good job of explaining Trangender in an age appropriate way.

There are really not enough words to describe how much this book impacted me. The journey of self discovery and identity goes through is beautiful and so poignant. It was a story of grief and at the same time a creepy ghost story. The author masterfully weaves the ghosts into detail of Bug's grief into his coming out story as trans. I did not think the story would work but it really does and I recommend it to anyone who loves a great ghost story.
