Haru, Part 1

Joe Latham

dark medium-paced

I just feel so baffled by this. I liked the idea of a fantasy with talking animals as the main characters. But I did not understand the stakes. I did not like the writing style/dialogue. Why is there a ghost mother and no explanation?!
It has been less than a week since I finished it and I can barely remember what even happened. I just know that I did not enjoy my time.

A sweetly unique book with natural illustrations with texture and depth. The story is cute but deeply emotional in a way you’d be surprised. This immediately reminded me of ghibli movies and it brought a ton of nostalgia. I think these are perfect for the kid who wants something just a bit different.

Thank you NetGalley!

Haru, a little blueberry-shaped bird, helps their best friend, a piglet named Yama, on an unexpected quest to do away with an immensely evil object. The pacing is a little off, but I absolutely love this first book. The characters are fun, the dialogue is charming, and the post-apocalypse setting is interesting. I enjoy that the characters don't fully understand their quest. The lighthearted but dark tone reminds me of Rice Boy.

I’m really hoping to raise my star rating as I continue this series. This first installment doesn’t get into too much, but I think there’s a lot of ground work laid. The art was incredibly cute, but hard to follow art some times.

Weird book. Not sure what I just read honestly.
