Perfect for any pirate fan. I absolutely loved this one. Amaya is such a young and powerful influence throughout this book. She deals with heartbreak, insecurities, as well as struggling to find balance in her new life-in freedom. She doesn't know how to be free, we go on this journey with her as she tries to seek justice and revenge but also the power of forgiving.
This does have a rather slow character arc, but by the end you realize the strides she made to become a better person.
Her past was taken from her and she strives to make sure her future is secure.
I solidly gave this three stars.
I only wished this could capture the world better. Give a better visual for the readers to really grasp the surroundings and places. The going back and forth between Amaya and Cayo was a bit confusing at first in understanding the timeline, and perhaps I enjoyed the suspense of the two characters meeting up. It feels like the novel falls a bit flat after these two get together and decide what is in the best interests for the future. When really, it should have made the novel stronger. There was a lot going on for this little adventure. Conterfeit, disease, heartbreak, romance, and injustice. Maybe focusing on a single problem or two and detailed their relevance better would have served this novel better off.
If you are looking for a fantasy book with a lot of diversity and representation, this is for you. Positively this book has a wide array of characters and doesn't over do their personalities. So thank you Disney for taking that advance!

This was solid! Not anything I'd immediately recommend but it had some good moments if someone wanted a specific book rec! It didn't really hook me until about 3/4 of the way through which isn't ideal but once it got me it was good! The twists were interesting enough to keep me going enough to finish this one.
I don't see myself picking up book 2 though.

I feel like I'm describing a lot of books this way lately, but this was so much fun! Amaya and Cayo were both fascinating to read about, and the dramatic irony built such great tension. I liked that the romance was rather back-seat in the narrative, which is something I always worry about when doing this kind of gender-bent retelling. Betrayal and revenge are such strong themes throughout this, and I loved every twist and turn as a new betrayal was revealed. For some people, this will likely be a little bit light on world-building, but I'm not someone who needs detailed descriptions of the world. A little bit more info about the wider context of the area would have been nice, but the ending read like that component would be blown up in book 2 and made a much larger focus of the narrative. The diversity of race, gender and sexuality in this book was done naturally and seamlessly in my opinion, and it was great to see. I'm definitely looking forward to reading book 2!
This was an intriguing story full of deception, revenge, and secrets from both the past and present! A very interesting tale that leaves room for the next book to go while also answering the major questions posed within the initial book.
I loved all the machinations and characters in this book and I'm looking forward to the final installment.

HI WOW I LOVED THIS A LOT????
I'll be honest. I didn't expect to. The Count of Monte Christo is cool and all, and yay for genderswapped retellings, but revenge stories, while fun, are not my normal wheelhouse. Also, it was such a break from Tara's last books, the Timekeeper trilogy, which I fell utterly and hopelessly in love with. Amaya is so far at the other end of the spectrum from soft boys Colton and Danny that I can't even comprehend it.
That said, I had to give it a chance, given how much I loved Tara's past work, and I am SO GLAD that I did. I would die for Amaya and Cayo without question, okay, they are wonderful and YES Amaya could kill you where you stood but also PROTECT HER OMG.
Anyway. I loved this a lot and I am SUPER READY for book 2. *STARES AT AUTHOR* Yes? Soon? PLEASE????
