Honestly don’t be afraid to skip sections. Some parts are so hard to get through but if you skip them, you can just come back to them once you’ve read deeper and have the urge to dissect more.

The story itself is genius. The way it was written and constructed to make the reader engage was well done. I give this book a three star rating because my OCD and ADD self couldn't get past the chaos of the material within the format of the book and the different fonts. I continuously had to put the book down because it got too overwhelming for my eyes and brain to adjust to, but when I picked the book back up after awhile, I was able to enjoy the story and content until I became overwhelmed again. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something completely out of the ordinary and can get through the constantly changing fonts and format within this very creatively written and scary story.

You either love this book or you hate it they say.... but I found myself loving parts of it and disliking some parts. Its like the book draws me in makes me a part of it and I fall out every time I had to read Jonney's footnotes. If your the kind who loves decoding hidden messages and have the patience for non linear narrative you might love it.

This book will not be for everyone. Yet, it’s no wonder it has a cult following with message boards devoted to dissecting it. (Message boards I now intend to peruse.)

It’s a book about
a bunch of notes that were meant to be an academic essay about a found footage documentary about a family tormented by a house with an ever-changing layout and ominous presence, and the essay is being put together by an unlikable and unreliable narrator who slowly goes mad.

This was the most unique and visceral reading experience I’ve ever had.  It was hard to read at times - thanks to crazy layouts that had you turning the book 90 degrees or flipping to different parts of the book, footnotes within footnotes within footnotes, and an academic-journal-like nature. But it was worth it. It took me almost two months to complete, but I purposely took it slow, so I could ponder and enjoy the ride, a ride that was discombobulating, and poignant, and horrifying, and sad. It made me feel like I was going insane along with one of the narrators.

This is the most difficult book I've ever read. It's also a top 5 for me now.

This took me a long time to finish. I started by taking notes of each chapter, writing down things I noticed about the footnotes and the parallel stories. It asked a lot and I really didn’t want to miss anything which led me to burn out. As I picked it up almost a year later I just took the pages as they came and didn’t think much about parts that I more skimmed than digested. Maybe if I had stuck with the intensity and side Reddit research I’d feel differently, but for me this was just too cerebral to be any fun. Both storylines left me with a “well I would have quit this hunt long ago”…which might be life imitating art…so perhaps I was impacted by this book?

I really enjoyed this book and it is probably one of my favorites. I was told that it was a good scary book so I went to the store to look @ it. Once I started flipping through it I knew that I wanted to read it. All the footnotes, the dual stories, the colored fonts and crazy layouts...it was a completely different read than I am used to and I really liked that about it.
